Variables: Dependent is rate of reaction. Independent is temperature of vinegar used,
measurement of baking soda and measurement of vinegar used.

Testable question: How does the temperature of vinegar affect the reaction rate of a solution with
baking soda and vinegar?

Hypothesis: It is known that changing the temperature of any solution also affects the reaction
rate of any experiment. When the temperature of any solution is high, the particles that are found
in the reactant move more swiftly, the particles have more energy, the particles will interact
positively and the rate of reaction increases (BBC, 2023). Based on this information, it is
hypothesized that different temperatures of vinegar will react differently with baking soda. The
reaction will differ in time based on the temperature of vinegar.

Materials: Apple cider vinegar, baking soda, 1 ttablespoon, 3 glasses, microwave, fridge,
microwave guard, stopwatch, thermometer, labels, pen, tape and scissors

Procedure:
1) 2 tablespoons of vinegar was poured into a glass.
2) “Warm” was written on a label.
3) Scissors were used to cut tape and the label was taped to the glass.
4) 2 tablespoons of vinegar was poured into a glass.
5) Timer was set for 20 minutes.
6) Glass was kept in the freezer for 20 minutes and the word “cold” was labelled and taped
to the glass.
7) 2 tablespoons of vinegar was poured into a second glass.
8) Glass of vinegar was microwaved for 60 seconds and the word “hot” was labelled and
taped to the glass.
9) Temperature of 30 degrees celsius was measured with a thermometer.
10) Glass was taken out from the microwave.
11) ¾ tablespoon baking soda was sprinkled in the hot glass.
12) Stopwatch was used to observe how long vinegar took to form baking soda into a ball.
13) Time in seconds was recorded.
14) Observations were written.
15) Steps 12 to 14 were repeated for the remaining glasses.
16) Solutions were discarded in the sink.
17) Work surface was cleaned.

Observations:
Glass with hot vinegar: As soon as baking soda was sprinkled into the glass, baking soda and
vinegar started reacting immediately. The solution took 19 seconds to form baking soda into
balls that could be seen at the bottom of the glass. Glass with warm vinegar: As soon as baking
soda was sprinkled into the glass, baking soda and vinegar started reacting immediately. The
solution took 45 seconds to form baking soda into balls that could be seen at the bottom of the
glass. Glass with cold vinegar: Within 3 seconds after baking soda was sprinkled into the glass,
baking soda and vinegar started reacting. The reaction was very slow compared to the other
