Task 1 - Short answer:
1) In many viral diseases, illness occurs shortly after exposure to the virus. In others, the
victim may not show symptoms for many years following the initial exposure. How would
you explain the difference between these two situations? Some viruses show symptoms early
because they travel through the body quickly and show reactions, the virus invades the host
cell immediately and starts reproducing. Other viruses travel more slowly, the virus takes
longer to enter the host cell and start reproducing.

2) Various bacteria are normally present in most of our body systems. These “good” bacteria are
essential for maintaining health. Describe two risks and two benefits of using antibacterial
creams to cure vaginal infections. 2 risks are putting chemicals in the vagina which will mess up
the pH level & disturb the environment of the vagina which will kill the good bacteria, the
cream will also cause reactions and infections in the vagina. 2 benefits are it works by stopping
the growth of yeast that causes the infection and it will not come back.

3) State and describe two differences between bacteria and viruses. First difference is bacteria
can live freely inside or outside the body, viruses need a host to survive. Second difference is that
very few bacteria cause disease, most are beneficial for our health while most viruses cause
disease.

4) State one reason why biologists consider viruses living things and why they do not. One
reason why viruses are considered non-living is because they don't need to consume energy to
survive. One reason why viruses are considered living things is because they cause diseases
which harm us.

5) Which major level of classification contains the most closely related species? Species. b)
Which major level of classification contains the largest grouping of species. Kingdom.

6) List and describe three ecological roles of fungi. Break down plants and animals, bring
nutrients to the soil and bring nutrients to the soil by decomposing which helps plants to
grow and provide food for animals.

7) State and describe three characteristics of a body plan. Body symmetry, skeleton and complete
gut. Body symmetry is the arrangement of animal organs and limbs, the skeleton provides
structure to the body and the complete gut helps with the animal's digestive system.

8) List and describe three reasons for habitat loss caused by humans. Cutting down trees,
destroying a habitat for construction and oil spills in the ocean.

9) Why do endothermic animals have far greater energy requirements than ectotherms? They
have to burn more energy to maintain their internal body temperature.
