ASSIGNMENT 3
GUIDELINES:
Due time: Friday Nov. 18th, start of class
Format:
- Answer questions directly on the booklet and hand it back to the teacher before the due date.
- You may also complete this assignment electronically, but it is your responsibility to print it in time
for the due date.
- Unless major circumstances prevent it (quarantine for example), only paper versions will be
accepted. Only students who have let the teacher know in advance about these circumstances will
be allowed to submit their work online. Assignments submitted online without prior
communication will NOT be graded.
- No make-up assignment. This is the only one you will get.
- Missed deadline will lead to a 10% daily penalty until day 5, after which you will get a 0 grade.
Extensions may be given if you explain the reasons you cannot submit it on time more than 24h
before the due time.
- The teacher will answer questions about this assignment by MIO, at the end of lectures (time
permitting), and during office hours.

1) Fill in the following table: for the electromagnetic radiations described below, convert
wavelength to frequency to energy and indicate the domain of electromagnetic radiation spectrum
they belong to. Write your answers in scientific notation. Make sure to indicate units! (12 marks)

Wavelength Frequency Energy Domain

4.20 x 10-7 m 7.14 x 105 Hz 4.73 x 10-19 J Visible light (blue)

3.14 x 10-6 m

6.56 x 10-2 m

2) Which one of the following types of radiation has the shortest wavelength, the greatest energy,
and the highest frequency? (4 marks)
a. Ultraviolet radiation.
b. Infrared radiation.
c. Visible red light.
d. Visible blue light.
e. None, because short wavelength is associated with low energy and low frequency, not
high energy and high frequency.

3) The four lines observed in the visible emission spectrum of hydrogen tell us that: (4 marks)
a. The hydrogen molecules they came from have the formula H4.
b. We could observe more lines if we had a stronger prism.
c. There are four electrons in an excited hydrogen atom.
d. Only certain energies are allowed for the electron in a hydrogen atom.
e. The spectrum is continuous.

4) Which of the following is not determined by the principal quantum number, n, of the electron in a hydrogen
atom? (4 marks)
a. The energy of the electron.
b. the minimum wavelength of the light needed to remove the electron from the atom.
c. The size of the corresponding atomic orbital(s).
d. The shape of the corresponding atomic orbital(s).
e. All of the above are determined by n.

5) The statement that "the lowest energy configuration for an atom is the one having the maximum
number of unpaired electrons allowed by the Pauli principle in a particular set of degenerate
orbitals" is known as (4 marks)
a. the aufbau principle
b. Hund's rule
c. Heisenberg uncertainty principle
d. the Pauli exclusion principle
e. the quantum model

6) Which of the following combinations of quantum numbers is not allowed? (4 marks)
a. n = 1, l = 1, ml = 0, ms = 1 2
b. n = 3, l = 0, ml = 0, ms = - 1 2
c. n = 2, l = 1, ml = -1, ms = 1 2
d. n = 4, l = 3, ml = -2, ms = - 1 2
e. n = 4, l = 2, ml = 0, ms = 1 2

7) Atoms with greatly different electronegativity values are expected to form: (4 marks)
a. no bonds
b. covalent bonds
c. triple bonds
d. ionic bonds
e. none of these
