What did milgrams study involve? - CORRECT ANSWER - 40 participants at a time over a series of
conditions

- There were two experimental confederates: an experimenter and a 47 year old introduced as a
volunteer participant

- The real participant and the fake 'drew' for 'teacher' and 'learner' but it was rigged so the real always
got teacher.



What was required in the study? - CORRECT ANSWER The teacher was required to test the learner on his
ability to remember word pairs. Every time he got one wrong the teacher had to administer increasingly
strong electric volts, continuing up to 450V. The learner gave mainly wrong answers and recieved the
fake shocks until they reached the 300V level. At this point they started pounding on the wall and no
longer answered questions. If the teacher asked the experimenter to stop the experimenter gave them
prods to continue, such as 'you have no choice'.

seated in the same room. Obedience levels fell to 40% as they could now feel the learners anguish more
directly. When they had to do the touch proximity condition the obedience decreased to 30%. Milgram
found that the proximity of the experimenter was also important. When they left the room, only 21%
continued to the maximum shock level.
