Basic Fire Alarm
FACP - answer Fire Alarm Control Panel
NFPA - answer National Fire Protection Association- Is a United States based trade
association that creates and maintains standards and codes for Usage and Adoption of
Local Governments.
NFPA 72 - answer National Fire Code. Primary Code used for fire alarm systems in
conjunction with international and local building codes.
NFPA 72 contains the following Standards which contain specific fire-alarm related
provisions and are referenced in NFPA 72:
•NFPA 13: Fire Sprinkler
•NFPA 70: The National Electrical Code
•NFPA 90: HVAC systems
•NFPA 110: Emergency Generators
NFPA 13 - answerFire Sprinkler commercial spaces
13d- residential sprinkler systems
13r- Large Sprinkler Systems
NFPA 90 - answerHVAC systems
NFPA 92 - answerSmoke Control System
NFPA 720 - answerRequirements for the installation of CO detectors and equipment
NFPA 110 - answerEmergency Generators
NFPA 70 - answerNational Electric Code
AHJ - answerAuthority Having Jurisdiction- An organization, office or individual
responsible for enforcing requirements of a code or standard, or for approving
equipment, materials, an installation or procedure.
NFPA 1 - answerNFPA 1
Fire Code•Investigation of fires, explosions and other related emergency incidents
, •Review of construction plans and drawings for life safety and fire protection systems
•Existing Occupancies and conditions, including the design and construction of new
buildings and remodeling of existing structures
•Handling of hazardous materials
NFPA 101 - answerNFPA 101- Life Safety Code
NFPA 101: The Life Safety Code (LSC), was first developed by the NFPA in 1927 and
was titled "The Building Exits Code.
ADA - answerAmericans with Disability Act- With respect to fire alarm systems, ADA
provides guidelines for the performance and mounting of Notification Appliances and
Initiating Devices (pull stations).
IDC - answerInitiating Device Circuit
NAC - answerNotification Device Circuit
Class A - answer-Includes a redundant path
-Operation Capability past a single open
- Conditions that affect the intended operation of the signals path are Annunciated
The Class A circuit utilizes
a pair of wires to attach to all of the devices and then a pair returns back to the panel.
NFPA 72 requires that a minimum distance
separates the outgoing and return wires on class A wiring. If a break occurs anywhere
in the circuit, every device is still active due
to the redundant circuit paths. There are four wires, two supplying power to the front of
the circuit and two supplying power from
the end of the circuit.
Class B - answer-Operation Capability past a single open
- Conditions that affect the intended operation of the signals path are Annunciated
The most common installation is Class B utilizing two wires that connect to each device
and an end-of-line resistor for wiring
supervision. Unlike Class A circuits, Class B circuits will not fully operate when a wire
break occurs. Every device down stream
of the break will be unavailable until the wire problem is corrected. The panel will,
however indicate a trouble signal.
