What is Mitosis:

-Cells that undergo mitosis are known as somatic cells (every cell in the body but gametes)

-Mitosis makes IDENTICAL cells

-Interphase is the state the cell is in most of the time

Interphase:

-Cell processes are completed

-Cell grows

-Cell makes proteins for cell division

Synthesis (S):

-DNA is replicated

-46 chromosomes become duplicated

-Still have 23 pairs (sister chromatids now)

Growth 2 (G2):

-cell completes all final tasks and copies all
organelles before ready to divide

-The Cell Cycle has checkpoints to make sure the cell is ready before moving on. There is a
checkpoint at each phase (G1, S, G2)

-If the cell is unregulated it could divide at the wrong time or in the wrong place which can
form a tumor

condenses into sister chromatids
