It’s time for printmaking! It is the process of transferring an inked image from one surface to another.
Like murals, printmaking has always been popular because it’s easy and fun to make. Making prints
also uses inexpensive materials. Let’s go and prepare for the materials that you will need. These
include:
1. Inks – choose inks that are water-based and nontoxic so that will not be hard to wash your apron
afterward.
2. Brayer – you can use a small 4-inch brayer.
3. Surface to roll the brayer – this can be a Styrofoam or an old yet flat baking tray or lid
4. Materials – some of these inexpensive materials are glue, cardboards, and various found objects
5. Surface for printing – paper is often used but there are other surfaces to put the print on like a
cloth or a wall.
6. Aprons and newspapers – these will keep you, your table, and your floor clean

A print is the image the artist makes from the printmaking process. An edition is a set of identical
prints that are numbered and signed. If you will make 5 prints for an edition, the impression numbers
will be 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, 4/5, and 5/5. After completing the edition, the artist destroys the printing plate so
that it can no longer be used. Here’s a sample:
Relief Prints
One of the most popular type of printmaking is creating relief prints. It’s just like the stamps you used
a while ago. The image to be printed is raised from a background.
