DPT 540 - VESTIBULAR SYSTEM EXAM QUESTIONS AND

ANSWERS WITH COMPLETE SOLUTIONS VERIFIED LATEST

UPDATE

What are the 3 main jobs of the vestibular system?

Gaze stability, postural stability, perception of motion

Peripheral vestibular structures

Otolith organs, semicircular canals, vestibular nerve (CN VIII)

What constitutes the static labyrinth?

Utricle and saccule

- each possess small patch of hair cells whose stereocilia/kinocilia are embedded in a

membrane containing small crystals

How are the maculae of utricle and saccule oriented?

Macula of utricle is horizontally oriented (same plane as base of skull), macula of

saccule is vertically oriented

What makes up kinetic labyrinth?

Semicircular canals

- 3 patches of hair cells (cristae) present in ampullae of each canal

Bony labyrinth

Consists of semicircular canals, cochlea and vestibule. Filled with perilymphatic fluid

Membranous labyrinth

, Contains membranous portions of semicircular canals and otolith organs. 1 end of each

SCC is widened to form ampulla, filled with endolymphatic fluid, surrounded by

perilymph fluid in bony labyrinth

Semicircular canals

Horizontal, anterior and posterior canals that are arranged 90º to each other. Detect

angular acceleration and velocity.

- 6 individual SCC become coplanar pairs (oriented in the same planes as pulling

direction of extraocular muscles that allow connections between sensory neurons and

motor neurons)

Sensory redundancy

If damage to 1 canal of the pair, the CNS can still get information from vestibular system

about head velocity within that plane from the contralateral member

Anatomy of semicircular canals

Membranous, fluid filled tubes. At one end of each SCC the tube enlarges to form the

ampulla. Epithelium within ampulla thickens to form ampullae crest, hair cells are

embedded within ampullae crest

Hair cells (SCC)

Each hair cell projects up in ampulla and has 40-70 fibers, kinocillium is the longest and

thickest of fibers. Fibers arranged from shortest to longest

- movement of fibers toward kinocillium is excitatory, movement away is inhibitory
