Assignment C, Part 2.2
Essay on using authentic materials and internet

a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching
Authentic materials include any written or speaking texts that are not written for teaching language
classes, such as The TEFL Academy. On the contrary, authentic materials include items, such as
restaurant menus, pop songs, newspapers, or TV advertisements. Therefore, for this task, I have
chosen an authentic most visited site traveling material, which students can relate too. As everyone
has their bucket list, which includes the activities and things they want to do before they die. This
article will intrigue the students to think about the things, which they may want to include in their
bucket list. In addition to that, there is a possibility that some of the sites, such as Niagara Falls or
Egypt Pyramids may already be included in their bucket list and if not then there is a possibility that
after reading this article they might update their bucket list to include some sites that they might
want to visit. Furthermore, this authentic text can make my class lesson more interesting as there
may be students who have already visited the sites and may want to share their experiences with the
class members.

b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items
My selection of the text of most visited tourist attraction in the world will introduce my mixed
nationality class of 15 advanced students about the sites that they might be interested in visiting.
Students will get an introduction to some restrictions, such as the children under 2 are not allowed
in pools in The Blue Lagoon, Iceland through this text. In addition to that, students will be able to
make their decisions regarding the time they would like to travel, such as if they want to travel
during the rush seasons. Also, students will learn a short history of each site. The vocabulary items
that I have selected from the text are the ones that represent and explain the sites. For instance,
gushing over explains the rush or flow over something in an uncontrolled manner. This vocabulary
word closely represents Niagara Falls. Therefore, the sites discussed in the article will help the
students in understanding the vocabulary words and will enhance their speaking and pronunciation
skills.

c) Why my activities would be appropriate for this class
Travel is important for everyone as it allows one to get out of their comfort zone to explore the
different cultures. Further, it boosts the confidence in an individual to connect with others globally.
Hence, the activity of matching I choose to do is appropriate for this class as it will allow the
students to get to know about the site in detail through the text and also students will be able to
decide whether they are interested in visiting that particular site. Further, the activity of itinerary
planning for site-seeing will allow them to plan their visit by searching online about the expenses
that will incur for their visit. Also, by looking at multiple travel and accommodations options they
will be able to determine the estimated costs that fit in their budget.

d) Advantages and disadvantages of using the internet for teaching and language resources
The Internet has allowed each and everyone to connect globally regardless of the location we are
located in. Considering the current situation of COVID-19, the internet has played a huge role in
connecting individuals with their loved ones virtually and also has allowed the world to continue
