Miracle Boy: An Inspiration to my Partner

The AHRC community has helped me a lot to come to an understanding of the

role of people to one another in the society. To begin with, disability is not inability as

such; people living with disabilities should not be looked at in a manner that suggests

that they are disabled. The AHRC has over the years been involved in helping

individuals and families that suffer from intellectual and Developmental Disability.

Over the years, they have carried out various activities in support of this campaign,

for instance, building the first support center for people with such Disabilities in the

US. They also offer personal support by bringing together either people who are both

disabled or where one is disabled and putting them to live together by providing them

with moral and professional support.

The Organization has numerous support staff to enable one cope and grow with

disabilities while they still fully explore their various abilities. In my case, I will be

supporting a partner who is intellectually challenged. I seek to draw support from the

Miracle Boy book. The book has many lessons that communicate volumes about

living with disabilities. It also speaks to the need for disabled people to seek to reach

their goals and dream in life no matter the challenges that may come their way.

In the story, a boy by the name Martin is the main character. This boy was born

by his mother with a condition that affects his muscular and spinal parts of the body.

, 2Surname

The conditions he suffers from are mainly muscular dystrophy and Spinal Muscular

Atrophy. The two diseases caused him to lose his muscle strength in the lower part of

his body. Over His life as a kid, His mother was his greatest motivator. His mother

used to tell him that he was capable of doing anything that he wanted to do in this

world. His mother never allowed any pity party for his son. He never wanted to show

to his son that he was pity-worthy or that his situation was one of the worst situations

a human being could ever be in. In one of the times in his life, Matlin almost fell of

His wheelchair. It is assumed that his mom would go ahead to pity him because his

lack of muscle strength would not enable fasten his belt.

On the contrary, his mother chided him for the failure of him telling his father

that he needed his seatbelt fastened. His mother continuously said to him that it was

his sole responsibility to speak up and ask for whatever he wanted. This was because

his life was his responsibility. In my analysis, the chastening can serve as an

encouragement to my AHRC partner. This is because Matlin’s mother does not use

his son’s disability as an escape from responsibility. As such, he repeatedly tells his

son that he should take responsibility for His life. This lesson helps my partner to

know that he should learn to speak up when he needs something from me or any other

person when he needs it.

Additionally, the book speaks about how Matlin’s mother never gave him special

attention due to his disability. Apparently, he was supposed to carry himself as

everyone else did in their house. This ensured that he was not spoilt. He would also be

able to understand people without disabilities also have flaws which also make them

not appeal to some of the people surrounding their lives. This will help my partner

cope up with challenges since he will know that having a disability does not require

that one should be treated especially because they are similar to everyone else.
