Case #2: The Venable Museum of Art; Daft, Chapter 2

Answer the following questions and submit your answers before class meets to the
drop box in MOODLE.
Be prepared to discuss your answers in class.
Your answers should evidence you completed the assigned readings and the case
study.

1. What are three possible purposes of the Venable Museum?

The museum was made from an old couple’s private collection, which they
willed to the city residents as a museum once they died. Three possible
purposes of the Venable Museum are:
1.) Academic by partnering with a university, leading school tours, and
allowing people who can’t normally access art a chance to come see the
collections.
2.) Exhibitions. The museum would have more exhibitions by bringing Islamic,
Hispanic and other exhibits to the museum. This would make the museum
more controversial and interesting to locals. This could even be called
interest instead of exhibitions because it shows how the museum wants to be
more interesting to locals, and possibly make more money.
3.) Operative. The operating goals are shown when the museum is talking
about how they can’t financially afford to run the museum when it is directed
towards the community as a whole. However, when it is in partnership with
universities they can stay afloat much better and get more visitors.

2. Who are or should be the museum’s customers? Link your answer to
possible purposes from question #1.

Currently the Museum is directed towards city residents. This is part of the
reason that they hold galas and are considering new exhibitions that are more
controversial. The city residents, however, are bored of the museum. The
private donors and faculty of schools suggest that the new customer for the
museum should be students and inner-city children. This would make the
museum become more academic for faculty, students, and inner-city children
who don’t normally have access to art.
