Factors Affecting Health and Safety in Sport

Health and Safety at work act in 1974
The main aim of Health and Safety at work is to ensure the health and safety of everybody in
the workplace . It gives employees the duty to ensure the health and safety of themselves
and each other. The principles are to control handling and storage of dangerous substances
and protect people other than those at work against risks to health and safety arising from
the activities of people at work. Employees are responsible for taking care of their own
health and safety and not misusing equipment provided to maintain health and safety.
Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations
Accidents and incidents are covered under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and
Dangerous Occurrences Regulations also known as RIDDOR. RIDDOR allows the HSE to
ensure a standardised report form is used and allow an investigation to prosecute , and
make improvements where necessary and allow offices from the HSE to advise
organizations on prevention of further accident and illness. It is a legal duty for people to
report work related deaths, work related diseases and major injuries.

Health and Safety Regulations in 1981
In order to provide first aid to their employees who are injured at work must have adequate
equipment and facilities. The organisation must provide first aid equipment, list of controls
and their locations and supplementary equipment and first aid rooms.

Manual Handling Operations Regulations in 1992
This applies to any situation where employees are carrying, lifting or moving loads. They are
not identified with a maximum weight so each requires a risk assessment of the task. The
working people are required to avoid hazardous manual handling operations as far as is
responsibly practicable.

Undertake a risk assessment by identifying hazardous substances. Decide what precautions
are needed such as measures to prevent hazardous substances being absorbed through the
skin Prevent or adequately control exposure to replace hazardous substances with safer
alternatives. Ensure that controls measures are used and maintained by continuing staff
training and checks by the manager or supervisors. Monitoring exposure must be done by
measuring the concentration of hazardous substances. Carrying out appropriate health
surveillance could be monitoring any adverse effects of exposure to hazardous substances.

Loco parentis
Loco parentis is the authority that parents would assign to another responsible adult that will
be taking care of their child for example a teacher or a coach. If a child is going away on a
school trip the teacher is loco parentis for that child which means that he has the same
responsibilities for all the children as if they were his kids. This means that the teacher would
then have to make sure that the child is safe as it is a legal obligation that the child is safe.
