Own Small-Scale Health Education Campaign: Evaluation
Ethical Issues to Consider
➢ Confidentiality
An individual participating in a research study should expect that the information they
share with the researcher will stay confidential. This means that the participant should
be able to expect that the information they give will not be shared with outsiders. The
information learned must be kept safe and private, unless the individual is in an
emergency situation and it will be the right decision to share the information with the
appropriate people. The ethical issue that arose in our campaign, we addressed this by
ensuring that the questionnaires did not ask questions that were too personal. We also
did not ask participants to write their names on the questionnaire, that way there is no
evidence that the information they disclosed to us was theirs. As the researchers, it was
our responsibility to keep their information private so that outsiders couldn’t see their
information and use it for their own gain.
➢ Rapport and Friendship
Once an individual agrees to be part of a study, the researcher builds a rapport to make
the participant feel comfortable with disclosing information. As a researcher wanting
information from others, it is important that you provide your participants with an
environment that is reliable. However, at the same time as making the participant feel
comfortable, researchers must avoid leading the participant into a situation where they
believe that they have become friends with the researcher. The ethical issue that arose
in our campaign that we addressed, we fixed this issue by ensuring that we made our
participants feel comfortable by giving off a friendly vibe and speaking to them in a
professional manner. We didn’t rush straight to extracting information out of them first
we asked them “how was your day?” or “hello, hope you're having a good day”, after
making them comfortable we presented them with the information and the
questionnaires. To avoid becoming too close with our participants we kept small talk to
a minimum and ensured that we didn’t go off topic for long.
➢ Intrusiveness
Individuals who choose to take part in a research study should not feel as if the
researcher is being excessively intrusive in the way that they conduct their research.
Intrusiveness can include intruding on the individual's time, personal space and their
personal lives. As a researcher, when you design a study you should come up with a
reasonable estimate of time spent with each participant. Overall ensure that you treat
those you study with respect. The ethical issue that arose in our campaign that we
