P7: Report on three examples of current affairs that affect public services and citizens.

 NHS Nurses being underpaid.

UNISON Staff Survey: https://www.unison.org.uk/news/article/2014/11/unison-
survey-shows-nhs-staff-are-overworked-and-underpaid/
This UNISON survey shows that the staff of the NHS are overworked yet underpaid.

In a survey carried out by UNISON, it was revealed that workers are working harder
and longer hours (without pay) in order to make up for staff shortages. Two thirds of
NHS staff work overtime with 58% claiming their workload has increased. More than
three quarters are not satisfied by their pay and reveal that they are not valued by
their employers. Four in five employees stated they are working more hours for less
money.

 Mental Health Problems within the services.

time-off-work-mental-health-problems-survey-civil-servants-survey-a7765566.html

The article above published by The Independent Newspaper, states that ‘’almost half
of public sector workers forced to take time off work due to mental health
problems’’.

Mental Health charity Mind carried out a survey which concluded that 48% of
workers within the public sector took three days off sick due their mental health,
compared to a day for those in the private sector.

 Suspended Employers.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/suspended-public-sector-workers-
cost-taxpayer-46-million-three-years-a7322136.html

‘’Suspended Public Sector Workers cost taxpayer £46m over last three years’’.
‘Reasons for suspension included allegations of sexual assault, cultivating drugs,
sleeping on duty and tormenting patients’.

This is costing the public sectors money that could be spent on other things, such as
resources which means that the services that the public are getting aren’t as good as
they should be.

The media reports on topics and incidents within the public services and they can portray
the services in whatever way they want the public to see them.
