Purpose of My Given Teams P1
Civil Engineering Team
The civil engineering team I have worked for was based in Nigeria with the purpose of
building and maintaining building structure and infrastructure. Our team consisted of 5
individuals who make decisions on different departments such as site supervisor,
construction manager, project coordinator, project manager, and assistant project manager.
Our team was formal due to the professionalism and the dedication of each employee to
the job. This means that there were more rules set and responsibilities given to everyone in
the team. Since our team has been involved in more than one project, we consider it to be a
permanent team. This allowed us to be familiar with each other which made work a lot
easier. Our main purpose in the business was to achieve our set goals as well as increase
efficiency and productivity in our respective roles.
Project Based Team
The project-based team was a team I worked in that was formed in college. This team was a
relevantly small team consisting of 3 individuals. The main purpose of this team was to
innovate a business that would function well in Oxford. Our team was divided by different
responsibilities and roles such as the researcher, financer, and planner. I would say our team
was informal since we were more laid back compared to my civil engineering team. This
means that there were not held back by any rules and we were less structured as a team.
This team was temporary as we only grouped together to perform this specific task. Our
main purpose in the team was to be innovative in order to maintain the competition in
college and stand out.
Characteristics in my chosen teams
(Civil Engineering Team)
For my civil engineering team that I have worked with, they have shown and expressed very
high-quality characteristics which later led to the success of our team.
For one, each member of our team had good knowledge about their clear roles in the
business. This means that every member of the team had clear understanding of their tasks,
responsibilities and processes in the business. This allowed team members to increase their
efficiency and be more effective in their job role. For example, the site supervisor in our
team had clarity on his role knowing all the risks and rewards that it consists of. This means
that he understood his role in the business and how he will contribute to the success of our
teamwork.
Our team also had good interpersonal relationships which made us all feel like we were one
big family. A good interpersonal relationship consists of common respect between the
individuals in our team as well as shared goals and interests. This allowed communication to
run smoothly through our team creating less conflicts between the members of the
business. Having respect for one another was the base common attribute all team members
had to have in order to join the team. With good interpersonal relationship came many

,benefits for the team members as well as the business itself. Benefits such as shared
expertise between members of the team and the reduction of alienation.
Another characteristic that our team had was clear lines of authority and decision making.
Very relevant to the clarity of roles discussed above, members had no responsibilities or
decision making outside of their own roles. Although individuals are able to share expertise
and advice to other members of the team, only people with that specific roles are able to
decide what’s best for the business. This was mainly because members of each role had the
most expertise in their jobs and had more knowledge than other individuals. This means
that a member in the site supervisor was not allowed to decide what actions to take in
another department such as the project manager or construction manager department. This
sets less conflict in the decision making of the business and less responsibilities for other
members of the team.
Finally, our team had our conflicts dealt with openly. This means that any problems which
faced any member of the team or the whole business itself was discussed between
everyone. Although some businesses may think that it is uncomfortable for most individuals,
the good interpersonal relationship between us discussed above had a major impact in
avoiding any embarrassment or awkward situations. With nothing to hide, all our problems
were always attempted to be solved as a group instead of an induvial. This allowed
problems to be solved more efficiently since everyone was involved in trying to fix it as well
as give members of the team more confidence in approaching conflicts and problems.
Project Based Team
One of the characteristics in this team was that all the team members had the opportunity
to contribute. This means that all opinions are respected and put into consideration for our
team. Also, since it was only 3 of us in the team, decisions were taken faster, and all team
members were able to contribute. On the other side, contribution was not an option since
our grades were being affected by the total outcome of the team. This also allowed
communication to travel faster and encouraged each team member to have an impact on
this project equally.
Another main characteristic in our team was the prioritisation of team goal. This is when
team members have the common team goal as their main priority in this project. My team
members and I have agreed at the start of the project to prioritise our team goal and work
towards achieving its goals. this allowed us to share a common goal and relatively have a
common interest to work towards these goals. This also allowed all our members to work on
our given roles however all aimed to the same goal which was to increase innovation and
stand out. This came with many benefits including clarity in decision making and a certain
motivation for my team.
Finally, our team’s success is shared and celebrated. Knowing that we all contributed to this
project our success is shared among each other and is celebrated. This is a main step which
can improve our interpersonal relationship as well as motivate each member of the team to
work harder and more effectively. Although we were not able to celebrate it in person
together, we were able to celebrate virtually and play some video games together.

, Different Roles in My Teams
Civil Engineering Team
Starting with my role in the business, as an assistant project manager I am a monitor
evaluator. This means that I filter ideas to decide if they are effective or unhelpful. This role
is very important because it saves the team time and effort in deciding what’s best for the
team. As an assistant project manager, I would be receiving many offers and advices from
many parties and this is when I will evaluate them and decide what’s best. For example, if
the construction manager recommends getting a new supplier, I would look into the
benefits and disadvantages of it. Without this role in the business, decision making may take
longer and may need a voting system to decide what the best outcome would be.
Samer senior would have the role of an implementer in relation to Belbin’s 9 team roles. As
a project manager, Samer is skilled to execute plans. As the leader of the whole project, he
is meant to take plans and ideas to the field. He also a natural team leader who pushes
forward the most. For example, new ideas such as solar powered streetlights will be
executed by him to the field. Without an implementer, the team would find it harder to take
action and make use of project plans.
Next, we have the site supervisor which acquires the role of shaper in the team. This allows
him to challenge norms, take lead and push the team. Sometimes, the team will be falling
behind time or lacking motivation, that’s when the shaper is needed. With such a stressful
engineering industry, this role is always effective on team members and always shows a
positive outcome on the team.
The construction manager leads the role of resource investigator. This role allows him to
find external resources for the team. With him as a resource investigator, he would be able
to find multiple sources for our resource needs or even different clients for our business. He
is a natural communicator and can extend the teams useful contacts and partnerships.
Without this role in our team will find it harder to reach out to suitable resources for our
business. For example, he may find cheaper and better-quality suppliers for cement then we
can which helps the business financially and gives it more opportunities.
Finally, the project coordinator in our team acquires the role of the completer finisher. This
means that he completes all the fine details left behind of the project. This role allows our
final services to meet the best quality and possible standards. For example, before finalising
our project, the complete finisher will look for any small mistakes such as nonpainted walls
or missing door handles and fix them immediately. Without him, we would hardly perfect
our services and meet the quality standards required.
Tuckman 4 stages of team development
These are stages created by Bruce Tuckman in which he considers teams follow in order to
become high performing. These stages include forming, storming, norming and performing.
Forming: This is when teams are first created and organized. Relating to my Civil Engineering
team, at this stage, we were getting to know each other and knowing how much time and
