Section 1: Introduction to Businesses
In this assignment, I will be looking at two contrasting businesses, one which aims to make a
profit and the other not-for-profit and how they are both successful. I will be looking at the
different types of ownership of the business and how they differ, how the stakeholders
influence the contrasting businesses, the structure of the businesses and the reasons for
their success.
One of the businesses I will be investigating is JD Sports and Fashion PLC. JD Sports is a
British sport, fashion and footwear retailer based in Bury, Manchester. JD was founded by
John Wardle and David Mankin. Both John and David opened up their first store in 1981, in
Bury; two years later they expanded to a shopping centre in Greater Manchester. Now JD
Sports operates in various countries across the world, mainly in Europe and Asia with a
handful of stores in the US. JD has a total of 696 stores worldwide. JD Sports and Fashion
appeals to all demographics with their sporty but stylish clothes and accessories along with
the high end but affordable footwear.
The other business I will be investigating is the United Nations Children’s Fund, known as
UNICEF. UNICEF is an international charity based in New York City, created to help and
support children that live in the third world or underdeveloped countries, providing
humanitarian support to those that need it the most. UNICEF was founded in December
1946 in New York City. UNICEF claims to be the ‘world’s largest supplier of emergency
lifesaving food for children’ working tirelessly to end brutal violence against children.
UNICEF provides life-saving vaccines, education and health care to thousands of
communities in need.
In the next section, I will be looking at features of each contrasting business, looking at their
ownership, liability, scope, size and other significant features.
