USP88 Sports Leadership

P8 Review own performance in the planning and leading of sports activities, identifying
strengths and area for improvements

I was given the opportunity to lead coaching sessions and events. This has helped me develop
and learn many new leadership skills. Doing this has also allowed me to identify my
weaknesses and strengths therefore giving me a chance on improving these arrears in order to
become an effective leader. I carried out different activities and teaching methods in order to
lead a coaching session. I was given the chance of teaching participants different skills and
tactics they could use in different activities; I even motivated and encouraged the participants to
try their best and challenge their potential which resulted in being successful. All these sports
activities were done indoor in the school’s sports hall. There were different levels of athletic
activities to enable participants to learn and move to a higher level of challenge. I like leading
coaching sessions as it allows me to practice my skills and abilities and also transfer my
knowledge to participants.

By the end of this task I hope to develop and improve my leadership skills. I can do this by
working with different age group participants however I best work with younger age groups of
participants as they share the same characteristics as me such as enthusiasm and motivation.
Younger participants have a lot of energy therefore they are more determined and try their best
to complete a challenge. I like teaching children as they would use these skills throughout their
growing process and it is an incredible opportunity to be a part of their development as I will be
teaching them numerous skills and life lessons. Younger children tend to absorb and consider
more knowledge which helps them to be a better person. I believe that doing this is an
achievement which gives me importance as I am able to help someone be a better and stronger
individual. However, there are certain reasons why I don't prefer to lead coaching sessions; one
of the reasons is that younger participants do not know or understand the rules of a particular
activity therefore the activity results are incorrect. They do not follow the rules therefore this
makes me upset; in order to be a good leader I would need to be more patient and resolve a
problem calmly. I would also need to be able to react in time of emergencies therefore reducing
risks and injuries.

Roles which I have presented

Friend As I like to work with younger participants, I had to be friendlier with them
in order to help them understand the activity and participate. I also made
myself more approachable in order to allow the participants feel
comfortable around me and ask for help when required. I made myself
more approachable by learning and practicing ways to approach the
participants and help them understand the activity.

Innovator As a good leader I had to make sure every participant tried their best to
complete the activity. I did this by introducing new methods and ideas of
completing the task which would allow them to find the task a bit easy in

order to complete it. However, when participants were still unable to
complete the task I had to introduce them to new activities which they
would be able to complete.

Motivator Throughout the activities I made myself a very motivating leader in order to
lead an individual or a team in all activities. I also made sure the
participants were motivated in order to allow them to try their best in every
activity. This will teach them not to give up therefore teaching them a life
lesson.

Problem solver In order to be a good leader I had to be a good problem solver in order to
solve conflicts that occurred between teams or individuals. Hence, it is very
important for me to be able to identify the problem and find a quick solution
to solve the problem and create a better environment to participate in.

Role model Being a good role model would influence the children therefore making
them look up to you. However, if you are not a good role model the
children will follow your bad foot step therefore resulting in a negative
result. The children may also not like you therefore they may decide not to
participate in the activity.

By the end of this task I want to identify my strengths and weaknesses therefore helping me
understand if I am a good leader or not. I can do this by recording my personal information such
as characteristics, quality and skills. Doing this will allow me to work on areas I need to improve
on in order to be a good leader.
