Unit 12B Distinction Task

Saving lives, one net at a time.

The Against Malaria Foundation is a charity which works to prevent the
spread of the infectious disease malaria through the distribution of long
lasting insecticide treated mosquito nets to susceptible populations in
developing countries.

Malaria is an infectious tropical disease spread by an infected female Anopheles mosquito.
These mosquitos spread the disease by biting people, injecting the malaria parasite into the
bloodstream of the bitted individual. Most of the mosquito bites occur late in the night between
10pm to 2am when individuals are mostly asleep and unaware that they are being bitten.
Consequently, over 400 million people fall ill and over half a million people die a year from
malaria. The most effective method of preventing individuals from being bitten at night by
malaria infected mosquitoes is by sleeping underneath long lasting insecticide treated mosquito
nets (LLIN). Unfortunately, there are many countries in the tropical regions, where these
mosquitoes reside, lack the resources and funding to produce and provide these nets at a low
cost for vulnerable residents. Furthermore, many individuals of low income cannot afford to buy
these nets to protect themselves, leaving them vulnerable and susceptible to the bites of
malaria infected mosquitoes. The Against Malaria Foundation aims to protect people in affected
areas from contracting malaria whilst they sleep at night through the specific intervention of anti-
malaria bed nets and long lasting insecticidal nets.

The

advantages and disadvantages of the bed nets as a method used to limit the spread of
malaria.
