Unit 20: Communication and Technology in the Uniformed Public Services

Know the different types of technological systems used by the uniformed
public services.

P4: Describe different types of technological equipment used by a selected uniformed
public service.

Introduction:
For this task I will describe different types of technological equipment used by a selected
uniformed public service. I will achieve this by giving a clear description that includes all the
main points of 5 different types of equipment used by the Police.

Electronic Tagging –
Electronic Tagging or monitoring is used to monitor curfew, prison orders or conditions of a
court. It is used in England and Wales. The tag is attaching to the ankle of an offender and a
monitoring unit is installed in a place picked by a prison order or court which is usually the
home of the offender. If the conditions are breached people can be taken back to court and
custody if the court decides to change the conditions. What are the two types of tags? The
first electronic tag is the curfew tag. The tags people get are decided by the court, parole
board or prison governor. The curfew tag monitors if people are where they are supposed
to be during the curfew hours in most cases their homes. If people are not where they are
supposed to be it will alert a monitoring centre. The second type of tags are the location
tags. They generally record and monitor data about peoples’ movements all the time. Its
main purpose it to monitor if people are at areas where they are not supposed to go which
is decided by the prison or court. It monitors if people are going to other programmes or
appointments if they are part of their conditions and generally monitors people if they are
sticking to their curfew. The locations tags must be charged at least once a day and if they
run out of battery it is considered as a breach people can be taken to custody or court. How
are the Police using this equipment? The Police are involved in using this equipment by
appointing responsible officers to use the information from the tags about the people who
wear them and support their behaviour if it is good or raise concerns if it is bad. The
responsible officers are mainly police officers or probation officers. This is how the Police are
using Electronic Tagging. Their main job is to monitor people who are wearing tags and raise
concerns if someone is breaking the rules.

, CCTV –
CCTVs are mainly used to monitor a building or a property from the inside and outside while
connected and transmitting to a monitor. CCTVs are mainly useful when it comes to tackling
crimes and the Police Forces can use different footage caught from the CCTVs in court. This
is because they use evidence if someone did a crime, they could also detect and recognise a
person during the evidence and appoint him as a main suspect of the crime. This means that
the Police Force investigate different crimes using the CCTV footage and they can confirm
the identity of people who were suspected of the crime. This way the Police investigators
also can determine if the actions shown in the footage are offences or not. Generally, the
Police Force are required to use CCTV footage to support their statements and use it as
evidence in court. This is important part of their job because they can determine if people
are guilty of a crime or not. This makes the judgements of the Police fairer. How? It makes
the whole research more detailed because the Police can watch the whole footage, they can
choose different times or a specific moment from the footage and carefully examine it. It
provides all the details that the Police need. It can be the sequence of events, entry and exit
routes, and different methods that people used. The CCTV is also very helpful in finding the
evidence of people doing different crimes. The Police investigators can watch a footage and
they can investigate and find the person who did the crime from investigating the surfaces
touched by the criminal, this way they can recover forensic evidence or just generally
recognising a person during the footage investigation directly. CCTVs have many useful sides
and aspects and that is why the Police use them. They can generally show if person is guilty
or not, which makes the decision of the Police and court fairer. Other types of crimes and
investigations that the Police carry out thanks to the CCTVs are vehicle collision
investigations, tactical operations, robbery investigations and more. They can be used to
monitor offenders, their behaviours, and movements throughout the day when they are in
public. This can also change the minds of criminals because knowing the fact that CCTV
footage can be used in court can stop them from offending because there are risks for them
to get caught.

Thermal Imaging Cameras –
The Thermal Imaging Cameras allow the Police to track, capture and locate criminals in an
effective way where different weather conditions, woodland, or other issues can create an
opportunity for the criminals to hide. This helps criminals to flee on foot from the crime
scene remaining hidden from people. How does the Thermal Imaging Camera work? The
normal cameras work in visible light this means that the cameras usually see what people
can see with their own eyes. However, the Thermal Imaging Cameras work in a different
way. They utilise a special thermal lens that detect infrared light, something that is invisible
