KEY QUESTION:
How has the rise of Islamophobia influenced the stigmatisation of Muslims within a contemporary
era?

AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
- To explore how the concept of stigmatisation around Muslims on terrorism has influenced racially-
motivated crimes and the treatment of Muslims.
- To understand how racial sterotyping on events such as the backdrop of 9/11 caused racial tension
and how this affected how Muslims were portrayed in the media.
- To demonstrate how newspapers, press and establishments have played a key role in the creation
of stigma surrounding Muslims and terrorism.
- To further develop how the Brexit discourse has led to a rise in Islamophobia and how those in
power such as UKIP, Nigel Farage and societies of control influence pulic opinion through hate
speech and how this encourages the prevalence of hate crime.
- How Muslim youth are victims of racial experiences through racial slurs, being targeted in public
places and brutally murdered.
- To analyse how Islamophobia is spread through media forums and how this contributes to the
treatment of Muslims in society and how this can lead to mental health issues.
