Internet of things – Assignment 1

Introduction
In my report I will be explaining the different principles and characteristics of IoT systems
and/or services from different sectors. I will also be describing, comparing, and evaluating the
applications and principles of IoT systems.
IoT systems are a group of physical objects which help with security in workplaces or home. An
example of a security IoT system is a sensor which detects movement when someone is near it
and starts flashing or making a sound. IoT systems are not only security objects, but they are
also other IoT devices such as medical devices.
The image below is an example of a motion sensor and light IoT system. The image will show a
network system which when the motion sensor is turned on will send a signal to the server and
the server will send a signal to the light so that it turns on.

, Systems and devices

Here I will be explaining the diverse types of IoT systems and devices and will providing an
example for each one. The systems and devices that I will be explaining are:
1. Sensors
2. Actuators
3. Servers
4. Databases
5. Network
 Ethernet
 Wireless
 Internet Protocol (IP)
 Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
6. Microcontrollers

1. Sensors in IoT detect and collect data about the environment e.g., a motion sensor
activates when the sensor detects movement.
2. Actuators are what you use to control the system or device in this case the actuator will
control how the sensor work.
