Unit 16 Assignment 2 – Visual merchandising
How Does it Look?
TESCOS
Diagram of planned display

Table of products

, Clause Easter did an experiment about jam where he asked customers if they would rather
there be 24 different flavours on show or rather there be 6 most popular flavours on show.
Many consumers answered that “choice is good for you”. It could be argued that a display
having 24 different flavours could look cluttered and not be appealing to look at. Therefore,
loosing the customers attention. In addition to this it could also be argued that when there
are too many different flavours it’ll be harder to actually find the flavour you’re looking for
in the first place. In my opinion, I disagree with having more options is better because the
display will look way too cluttered. Clause Easter also stated “offering only limited selection
of merchandise may be helpful to ease the burden shoppers have in deciding which product
to choose”. That is why my display has just 1-3 types of the same brand of fizzy drink. I
believe that by displaying just coke instead of many other fizzy drinks as well makes my
display look more clean and appealing. Shows that I don’t need a clutter of products to grab
customers attention but more how I display the product itself.

Tangible Techniques Used

Use of props. Nancy Kirk stated that using “plan your display using signs, props, and
effective lighting to make displays come alive and attract customers attention”. Props are
something that is used with a project in a display that clarifies the function of the
merchandise being sold or the story behind it which could potentially attract customers
attention.. Props are very important when making the display and also in the process of
creating an image in the customers mind. They not only help tell the story of the product
but also about the brand and the store. Props aims are to highlight items on sale to increase
profit.

Signage. Nancy Kirk stated that using “plan your display using signs, props, and effective
lighting to make displays come alive and attract customers attention”. I agree that the use
of signage attracts customers attention because it communicate product information and
key messages to your customers. This technique can be used throughout a business
premises to communicate key message to customers.

Electronic display. Clause Ebster stated that “one option to capture shoppers fickle
attention is to use point of purchase displays.. such as electronic displays”. I agree with this
because It helps engage your audience who are present making them feel more involved
and more likely to purchase from you, if customers are impressed by what they see then
they are more likely to spread the word to their friends and family as well as posting online.
In addition to this electronic displays create new content for your customers keeping it fresh
and eye catching without a significant investment in finance or time.

Block Placement. Angie Bell stated that “products arranged by colour and block placement
rather than by product category will improve the display”. I agree with her statement
because it Lines the display with more of your product. By using multiple facings of your
product in a display to create a visual block for the customer you increase your total share
of available space and thereby the likelihood the customer will see more of your brand and
