Pass, merit and distinction achieved!
This assignment contains parts A and B of BTEC Applied Science year 3 assignment unit 21 medical physics applications. DISTINCTION was given to me without any feedback, and it is very well done and explained. I have completed all of the tasks specified in the...
BTEC Assignment Brief
Ionising radiation
What is ionising radiation?
Ionising radiation is electromagnetic radiation with enough energy to disrupt chemical bonds,
resulting in charged ions in the materials it passes through. X-rays and Gamma Ray imaging are
two examples of ionising radiation methods used in medical diagnosis and therapy.

X-Rays
ionising radiation is high-energy radiation that causes an atom to become charged or ionised by
removing firmly bonded electrons from its orbit. It can take the shape of a wave or a particle. X-
rays are electromagnetic radiation that looks like visible light. X-rays, on the other hand, have a
limited range of applications. It has a higher energy than light and can pass through almost any
object, including the human body. Internal organs and tissues are seen via medical x-rays.

Dislocation of a bone joint is one illness that would benefit from the use of ionising radiation to
treat and diagnose. Thyroid cancer is another illness where ionising radiation is used to diagnose.
X-rays are a tool for treating bone joint dislocations. Because X rays have such high energy, they
are extremely useful in medical applications. The X-ray technology will be able to determine the
location and extent of the fracture. When electrons collide with an object, X rays can generate an
image (joint dislocation). This image will help the doctor to clearly determine where the
dislocation is located and fix it quickly. Proton beam treatment is a technique for diagnosing and
treating thyroid cancer in which a proton beam is used to destroy cancer cells. An advantage of
this approach is that it has little effect on the organs surrounding it. The technology of proton
beam treatment works by lowering radiation. Proton beam treatment can help with cancer side
effects include being unable to talk and losing the ability to eat, taste, and swallow, which can lead
to additional health issues because these functions are so important in everyday life. Furthermore,
it can lower the chance of developing cancer later in life. Proton beam therapy is used for treating
thyroid cancer since it is a cancer treatment that allows patients to go about their daily lives
unaffected by the approach. A patient may be apprehensive to employ an ionising therapy
