ASSIGNMENT 1:
P1: Explain how work experience can support the development of own professional skills and personal attributes for
work in the health and social care sector.

Developing skills and attributes:
While completing work experience it extremely important that I develop professional skills and personal attributes to
prepare myself for work in the health and social care sector. A skill is the ability to be able to perform something well
and an attribute refers to a quality which may contribute to who you are and helps to develop your personality.

Reflecting on my own skills and attributes and areas for development is important preparation work experience.
Reflection involves thinking consciously regarding an event or incident to learn from it and better your practice.
Reflecting on my skills may involve identifying what I did well, why it may have been a success and what have I
learned to repeat the success of your skill within the future. I can reflect on my areas of development through
identifying what may have not gone well, why it may not have gone well and what I can do to improve. Reflection
can also help us to understand why things are done a certain way. I could use reflection within my work experience
to improve on the areas that I may have struggled with or lacked confidence in to better my practice and ensure that
I am using my skills to my best ability and developing skills in areas that I may lack.

Developing professionalism is extremely important that I put into practice within my work experience in the health
and social care sector. Developing professionalism means to put into practice the standards that are set out by
regulatory bodies and your place of work. This can include several things; finishing tasks in appropriate time,
dressing correctly, finishing the tasks set out for me at a high standard. During my placement I would develop
professionalism through finding ways that I can improve, and I can improve on following the standards set out for
me more effectively. An example of this could be that I find ways to ensure that all my tasks are completed on time.
Communication and interpersonal skills are more skills and attributes that I will work on developing during
placement. Communication skills may include, speaking, non-verbal messages and listening. Interpersonal skills refer
to interacting and communicating with other individuals face to face. I would need to continually develop my
interpersonal and communication skills to develop increasingly positive relationships with the individuals that I will
be working closely with during my placement in the health and social sector, such as, my colleagues, patients, and
their families. An example of when I would be able to develop on my interpersonal skills during placement may be
finding new ways to effectively communicate with individuals who are hard of hearing to provide them with high
standards of care.

Organisational skills such as, time management and prioritising tasks are important to develop to be able to perform
by duties on placement to the best of my ability. Time management includes being to use my time during and after
placement to be productive. Time management is important because it will allow me to feel in control and carry out
tasks to the best of my ability, rather than become stressed and do them poorly. An example of where I would be
able to develop my time management skills on placement is by creating a list of things that I may need to ask my
supervisor at the end of the day, rather than keeping disturbing them. This will be beneficial because it will my time
during placement and theirs. Prioritising tasks refers to completing tasks in an order based off their importance, such
as, the ones that need completing first. This is important because I will be able to use my time effectively during my
placement. An example of where I would be able to prioritise tasks within my placement could be using the traffic
light system, this will involve highting red, amber, and green tasks. Green meaning that it needs to be completed
right away, amber meaning that it needs to later or in the morning and red which may mean that I need to complete
this task within the next few days or weeks.

Technical skills such as, data handling and using specialist equipment would also need to be developed during my
placement to ensure safe practice. Data handling means storing and recording information in a systematic manner.
This involves ensuring data is storing in its correct format and be accurate, this will make it accessible for other
individuals who may need to access it. each work experience placement within the health and social care sectors will
have different policies and procedures set out so that I will be able to ensure it is done correctly. An example of
where I would be able to develop this skill within placement could be that I need to store the names and birthdays of
residents in a care home. I would do this by ensuring that I am storing them in the correct place and entering
accurate information. By developing my technical skills, I will be able to this effectively without compromising the
safety of the residents. The usage of specialist equipment could mean developing knowledge on being able to use a
stair lift for an individual that may not be able to walk down the stairs due to mobility issues. However, during my

, work placement I will only be allowed to assist a senior member of staff use and will not be able to use specialist
equipment myself. An example of where I would be able to develop my technical skills through using specialist
equipment in my work placement could be assisting a member of staff who is using a hoist to life a resident in a care
home. I could develop these skills by assisting and observing the senior member of staff.

Teamwork skills are crucial that I develop and consistently improve on during my placement. Teamwork skills can be
defined as the ability to work well with other individuals as a member of an organised group. Developing these skills
are important to help ensure that both the service providers and service users get the care and support that they
need. An example of where I would be able to effectively develop teamwork skills on placement may be developing
good relationships with my colleagues. This will enable me to develop teamwork skills because I will be able to
communicate effectively with them and have a good working relationship. This is important within my work
experience because it will allow us to show effective care and support within the setting.

Confidence and personal responsibility are skills and attributes that I must ensure I develop during my work
experience for a wide range of reasons. Confidence refers to the feeling or even belief that I will be able to have trust
or rely on an individual or situation. Confidence is not something that is able to be learned, instead it is a positive
state of mind, therefore, it can be improved through affirmations, such as, having an “I can” attitude. An example of
where I would be able to develop confidence skills on placement may be making informed and sensible decisions
and acting them out with confidence. This is important because it shows initiative and will furtherly boost my
confidence. Personal responsibility means to be responsible for your own actions. One of my responsibilities is to
ensure that I am doing work experience to the best of my abilities. Being professional is one of the key personal
responsibilities that I will have on my work placement. An example of where I will be able to develop my personal
responsibilities in placement is through completing the tasks that I have been given. This will show that I am taking
responsibility and ensuring that I complete anything that is asked of me.

The ability to link theory practice is arguably one of the most vital skills that I need to develop during my work
experience for work in the health and social care sector. Ultimately this means to apply the knowledge that I have
acquired in college into my work experience in preparation for my future career in health and social care. An
example of where I may get the opportunity to put this into practice within my work experience could be with a
dementia patient. This may be them reacting in an aggressive manner, due to them losing control of their life and
abilities. I would be able to put theory into practice in this situation through remaining calm, patient and
understanding of what that individual may be going through.

Clarifying expectations for employment in health and social care:
It is important that I clarify any expectations that are set out for me within my placement to be able aid my future
employment within the health and social care sector.

Respecting diversity and equality are important to constantly work on developing within my work experience for
employment in health and social care. Diversity frequently means a variety or range, this could be cultures, genders,
sexual orientations, or disabilities and so on. Through respecting diversity in my work placement, I will be able to
develop knowledge on the service users that I am working with, this will give an accurate insight on what care would
be best for them and how to care for them appropriately. An example of where I will be able to develop skills in
appropriately respecting diversity in my placement could be seen through different religious practices. This could be
that I am providing care for an individual that has a Halal diet. To respect this, I must ensure that their religious
practices are met, such as, ensuring that their dietary requirements are met. Within the health and social care
sector, equality refers to every individual having access to the services that they may require and receiving this at a
quality that is equal. This must meet their personal needs, no matter their lifestyle choices, income or where they
live etc. an example of where I could include this within my work experience could be that I am caring for an
individual that is Muslim and may wear a Hijab. To develop these skills, I must ensure that I am respecting their
religion and ensuring that they are receiving.

Respecting confidentiality and dignity are important skills to develop during my work experience for future
employment within health and social care. Respecting confidentiality means to keep information regarding service
users confidential by not sharing any information about individuals without their knowledge and informed consent,
this includes also not sharing with their family members. An example of where I could put this into practice in my
work experience for employment within health and social care could be following safeguarding procedures
accurately, such as, only discussing service users on a need-to-know basis. Respecting dignity refers to treating
