M1. Analyse the different recruitment methods used in a selected business
D1. Evaluate the recruitment processes used and how they contribute to the success of
the selected business
Introduction to my selected business
Amazon is a trusted worldwide company that sells goods and services which first operated
in Seattle, Washington. It is a very large company, holding over 1 million employees and having a range of stores
from “526 retail stores, 19 Amazon Books stores and 4-Star stores dispensed by Amazon outlets” 1. Amazon tends to
focus on electronic commerce, digital streaming but most importantly, the customers as their mission statement is
“Our vision is to be earth's most customer-centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and
discover anything they might want to buy online.” 2 Jeff Bezos, owner and founder of Amazon, first started the
company in a small garage where he served as an online bookstore. His parents “invested $250,000 into the start-up
of the company”3.

Why Amazon recruits
One reason why Amazon will need to recruit is because they are always expanding their business by opening new
warehouses which means they will need employees to run these new warehouses. For example, “Amazon plans to
open a fulfilment centre in Republic, Missouri, which will have 500 fulltime jobs immediately available. Amazon also
plans to open a fulfilment centre in Waco, Texas in 2021. Employees will work alongside Amazon robotics to pick,
pack and ship small items to customers such as books, electronics and toys.” 4 As Amazon are always expanding, they
will need employees working in the warehouses to get things done more efficiently. If these staff members also have
a lot of experience and/or are trained well, it will lead to an increase in the productivity level, allowing them to
maintain their position as a monopoly.

Another reason why Amazon will need to recruit staff is because of employees are being internally promoted. For
example, there are hardworking committed employees being promoted to a manager when new branches open. As
a result, the old position will need to be filled in by a new employee. Also, an employee in the sales department may
be promoted to a senior role in the department. This means the old position will need to be filled in with the same
skillset and mindset (being hardworking and committed).

A third reason why Amazon will need to recruit staff is because systems are changing such as health and safety. For
example, the Coronavirus Act has been applied to Amazon and their warehouses, meaning they will need to
prioritise their employee’s health and safety. This global pandemic has managed to cause a rise in unemployment
but “in March, Amazon has announced the hiring of 175,000 roles across their operations network to help provide
for their communities and keep as many people as possible working during the COVID-19 pandemic” 5 Amazon has
ensured that their employees health and safety is considered heavily as they announced recently that they were
setting up its own Coronavirus testing lab to address health concerns of people working in their facilities.” 6 Amazon
has recruited more employees during this global pandemic because they will have a huge increase in work rate until
the pandemic is over. However, “Amazon are providing the opportunity for 125,000 of those who came on with us
seasonally to stay with Amazon and transition into a regular, full-time role,” 7 which will help Amazon to have an
increase in work rate for the long term. This clearly shows Amazon has recruited more employees during this
pandemic, to benefit them in the long run.

,An internal method Amazon use to recruit their staff is through aptitude tests on their current employees for an
open vacancy. As this is internal, current employees are assessed to see their capabilities and personality to see
whether they are fit enough for the wanted job. “They're extremely common in job assessments as they can be used
to predict the likelihood of a candidate's success in a
job role, whilst eliminating any bias through its
https://www.graduatesfirst.com/amazon-assessment-tests
standardised administration.”8 Amazon has 5 steps
within their assessment process. The image used
clearly suggests that step 2 of Amazon’s assessment
process is aptitude tests and how to prepare for it. This is beneficial for Amazon as it will allow current employees for
a potential promotion because there is less competition. As employees will be working hard for a promotion, it can
encourage them to progress further in their career. Another benefit of using this method for recruiting is that it will
allow Amazon to save money and time. This is because “you don’t need to employ other measures to screen
applicants”, allowing Amazon to save money and time. By saving money and time, Amazon will be able to have a
higher figure of profits, allowing them to reinvest back into their business. However, there are some drawbacks for
Amazon using this method such as employees having anxiety. As a result, the candidates will not be able to perform
to the best of their ability when undertaking the aptitude test, leading to Amazon potentially recruiting the wrong
candidate. Another drawback to using this method is that Amazon could fail to retain serious good candidates. For
example, “applicants might not take the aptitude test seriously without any authentic and conventional pre-
screening.”9 As a result, Amazon could have a decrease in work rate which will lead to their competitors having an
advantage over them. This is because Amazon could take longer to process and dispatch, leading to their customers
being frustrated with the delivery timings which will suggest Amazon are not committing to their mission statement
of raising the bar of customer experience and meeting their aim of becoming a more customer-centric company. To
conclude, I believe this internal method of recruiting is highly effective and helps to contribute to the success of
Amazon. This is because aptitude tests allow current employees for a potential promotion because there is less
competition. As employees will be working hard for a promotion, it can encourage them to progress further in their
career. This can lead to these current employees to be a lot more efficient within their business, allowing Amazon to
have an increase in work rate. Also, if these current employees become more flexible, it will mean Amazon will not
need as much employees as they would normally need, allowing them to save money through wages. By saving
money, Amazon can have an increase in profits, allowing them to reinvest back into their business to have a
competitive advantage over their competitors. As a result, Amazon will be able to maintain their position as a
monopoly and potentially gain more of the market share because they will have more flexible employees.

Moreover, another internal method Amazon will most likely use to recruit their staff is through internal emails. This
means that Amazon could directly email all their employees within their company to advertise a new job that is
available to anyone in the business, though they need to meet the job description. This can be very beneficial for
Amazon because the candidates will already know the company, meaning they will know the standards, rules etc. To
add, it allows Amazon to save money as it will cost little to no money because it is done internally, meaning they
won’t need to spend much money on advertising and money on hiring recruitment agencies etc. As a result, Amazon
can carry on with their tactic of investing their profits back into the business to make more profit in the long run.
However, this limits the choice of candidates as its within their business which means Amazon might not find the
best suitable employee for the job. This can cause further problems like having to refill a position if someone was to
be promoted to the new job. To conclude, I think this is an effective internal method of recruiting current employees
because Amazon will be able to directly communicate with their employees to show them the new open job
vacancy, allowing them to save time. Also, as this is internal, Amazon will already know their candidates, meaning
they won’t have to waste time building a good relationship and communication when undertaking the recruitment
and selection process. They will be able to save money too because this is an internal method meaning Amazon will
be spending little to no money on the job advertisement.

, Amazon also uses external methods to recruit their staff like phone interviews. For example, “Amazon encourages
candidates to connect with a recruiter or a member of the hiring team. The recruiter conducts a phone interview in
which questions are related to the leadership principles and their
application in the previous career span of the candidate. Often the
questions in these phone interviews consist of behavioural based
questions and how the candidate has faced and handled challenging
situations in the past in the context of the leadership principles.” 10
The image used clearly demonstrates how to prepare well enough
for the phone interview, ensuring candidates can portray
themselves in a good manner when undertaking the phone
interview. The reason why Amazon use this method for recruiting is
because it provides similar quality of data of their interviewee when
asking them questions. This is beneficial as it is quicker and easier to
interview through phone than face to face. In addition, by phone
interviewing interviewee globally, it will allow a higher chance of https://www.amazon.jobs/en/landing_pages/phone-interview
finding the suitable employee for the required job. However, this isn’t the most effective way of recruiting staff
because phone interviews tend to be shorter than face to face interviews. This is a problem for Amazon as they may
not be able to read their interviewee properly (through body language, facial expression etc). Also, if a candidate was
to be recruited, they may not appear to be at the standard, they stated on the phone interview when working.

Furthermore, another external method Amazon use to recruit
their staff is social media recruiting. For example, Amazon use
social media such as Twitter in order to recruit staff members.
Twitter is a social networking platform which is used to
communicate with others in short text messages known as
tweets. Amazon has a twitter account, Amazon Fulfilment,
which is used to announce any operational and customer
service jobs available around the world within Amazon. This is
very beneficial for Amazon because they are able to recruit
employees by using little to no costs. This will allow Amazon to
have a higher figure of revenue within their business, allowing
them to reinvest back into their business and have potentially AmznFulfillment

have an advantage over their competitors. Another reason why using social media to recruit staff is beneficial is
because it can allow Amazon to have a good relationship and communication with the prospective employees, which
can allow the employees to adapt to the environment of the business if they are recruited. As a result, the recruited
employees will be motivated to work hard as they already have a good relationship with the company. This will then
lead to an increase in the productivity level within their business. However, a drawback to using social media to
recruit staff is that the social media profiles of candidates could be an unreliable representation of themselves.
People believe it is good to use social media as a recruitment method for background checking but the candidates
may have erased all negative information of them.

Recruitment of Staff
Companies with 250+ employees are labelled as large companies. Amazon has over 1 million employees working for
them making them a very large productive and busy company. Workforce Planning is an ongoing process which will
be needed for large companies like this in order to “analyse the current workforce, determining
future workforce needs, identifying the gap between the present and the future, and implementing solutions so that
an organisation can accomplish its mission, goals, and strategic plan.”11 These are some of the reasons for recruiting
new staff for Amazon and other large businesses:
