Employee Training and Development:
Reasons, Benefits and Costs
In this report , I will be discussing how a selected
business trains their employees and how they allow
them to develop. Also I will be discussing how the
training and development will allow the business to
achieve its objectives through the training they have
provided. The business I have chosen is JD Sports
which is one of the biggest and main retailers
holding their share of the leading market share.
Explain why a selected business trains its employees
Every business would have to provide training for their employees
because it's something that has to be done as no one can come into
environment and know what they doing , yes they may have the
experience but talking first hand experience the employee will need to
know how to apply their role professionally that will allow them to
understand why this is being provided to them and allow the business to
identify where the training can be improved or not. Also , the business
must have to provide they training because , if something was to go
wrong with the employee on the actual role it won't only impact him but it
will impact the business as well which would leave a negative impression
on the business from the customer's point of view which would be even
worse for the business as word of mouth is really powerful.
Looking at JD Sports , they would have to provide full training as the
employees that work there look really young to 17-20 years old who could
be students and them being students I believe they may have some sort
information how to work in a retail environment but they won't
understand to a point how important it is to get this training as it will help
them gain skills , knowledge and help them develop they current skills to
another level of professionalism. If JD Sports wasnt to provide training to
their employees and hire them , the business would have no work ethics
there as the employees would be lost and confused about what to do
when it comes to certain situations and that would lead to the business
getting a negative reputation just because they didn't provide training to
their employees.
JD Sports as a business they would have to provide training because it
will show a positive attitude towards the employees and the customers

itself. This is because the training they provide is meant to fulfill the
needs of the customers and why the employees work for them. Also it
helps the business even more as it would allow them to tackle a training
analysis which would allow them to see what needs improving on the
training programme including the weaknesses in the employees.
I believe that training is really important when it comes to the employees
because it will help them understand how important the role is they hold
and how it will help even more for the future including that the training
will help them get into a working mindset and they will have to use these
skills when it comes to working in a professional environment.
Describe how a selected business identifies training needs
The way how JD’s identify the training needs is that everytime on the
shop floor they have a store manager put in place and this role is very
important for the business as they don't only look after the customers but
they monitor the employees as well. This is because it’s part of their role
and there could always be a new employee that's joining the team and for
that it's the store manager's responsibility to monitor the new employees
and the current ones. Also , the store manager has to be there as he or
she can identify what mistakes are being made and if it happens
continuously , the manager would recommend it to the training manager
and make sure that they have a close look.
JD Sports are always looking for maximum potential for their employees
as a retailer as they have said that on their careers page. The company
will reach out more on training without even looking for mistakes because
they are the leading sports retailer and they want to keep that position
and for them to do that they have to reach out to the employees as well
as they are the face of the business. Also , the current training
programme they have available for their employees won't always last
forever as businesses are always changing how they work as a business
and how they deliver their service via the employees. So the business will
always encourage their staff to always improve, including that JD Sports
have defined themselves as very innovative, meaning that they take staff
opinions and ideas into consideration.
