Unit 16: Human Resource Management

D1: Suggest, with justification ways of improving motivation in an organizational setting.

 Introduction
This assignment focuses on ways in which the National Health Service (NHS) can
implement new ways to improve the motivation within the organization. These ways will be
further explained and justified as to why they are likely to be effective and cause the
employees of the NHS to feel motivated at work.

 Ways to Improve Motivation

1. Recommendation: Taking additional time off.

Explanation: When employees work hard and continuously complete tasks on time as well
as completing them with quality, it would be commendable if the employees were allowed to
take a step back from the work environment, where they can relax and recuperate. This will
ensure that they are ready to work hard and do their best when they return.

Example: if an NHS employee who works in administration has completed all tasks like filing
all paperwork and documents, producing and distributing letters and forms, etc., as well as
doing additional tasks that may not be due soon or working overtime, some time off will be
well deserved.

Justification: This method of improvement is likely to be effective because it will show
employees that they are not just “slaves in the system” and that their managers value their
service and time that they are willing to give them additional time off from work. Employees
are likely to be more productive at work. Continuous time on the job may lead to employees
being tired, stressed or having a negative attitude at work due to the lack of rest that the
brain needs in order to function efficiently. This will further lead to the employees producing
sloppy work, therefore, time off from work will be beneficial to both the employees and the
employer. This way is also cost efficient for the organization, however, they may need to find
persons to cover the absent person’s position. This may affect the NHS if no one else has
the skills and experience needed to do so. On the contrary, the NHS can put together a
schedule that will allow the employee to take a break whilst also not interrupting the
services.

2. Recommendation: Access or Tickets to Special Events

Explanation: Employees who work extremely hard at work deserve special treatment
because they did not have to work as hard as they do. By supplying employees with tickets
to events such as music concerts, sports games, festivals, etc., it will be a bonus having
access to these events that tend to be expensive. Also employees won’t have to spend their
own money to go to these events.

Example: an NHS nurse who has dealt with all patients and is known for being enthusiastic
in terms of their job deserves a chance to have fun and detach from work and not worry
about the stress that the work environment brings at times. If is known that one of the
employees who is work driven has been looking forward to attending a music concerts that
different celebrities will be performing at, but couldn’t because the tickets are too expensive
