Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs - LAA
Providing support for individuals in the community
Importance of Promoting Equality,Diversity and Ant Discrimination
In this assignment i will be explaining the importance of Equality , Diversity and
Discrimination and why equality should be prevented and why discrimination against
must be prevented.

What is Equality?

Equality is defined as the act to treat others fairly no matter what their value or where
they come from regardless of their ethnic background or nationality they must get the
equal opportunities as others. The importance of promoting equality in a health and social
care setting is to show that the individual feels welcomed and feels safe when walking in
into a health and social care setting. The use of equality to meet the individuals needs is
that they get the equal opportunity as others for example a person in a wheelchair would
need a ramp for accessibility this is form of equality as it shows this person is welcomed.
What is Diversity?

Diversity is the responsibility of recognising everyone is divergent in their own ways and
that we should respect them. As everyone is unique as they come from different
ethnicities and we have different upbringing.

The use of diversity to meet the service users needs has an impact as it shows that
whether an individual is allowed to retrieve something based on their ethnic backgrounds
or on their health as others may seem to not like them because of where they come from
or depending on their health.Although the ue diversity is needed as it shows that they are
welcomed to have anything such as the care of a nurse. Promoting diversity is important
in a health and social care setting because it welcomes the fact that the individuals won't
be judged upon their character and it will increase their levels as more people will feel
wanted.

Use of Equality and Diversity with Patrick
In the Case study there are numerous amounts of equality and diversity found.Firstly the
use of equality shown is when Patrick and his partner James has been assured of
confidentiality as they had been tested positive and due to that he has been shown a sign
of equality as Jeff knows they have the right to secrecy. The use of diversity shown is
when they have been offered the choice of online counselling or a face to face
appointment at the Terrence Higgins Trust meaning that he has access to all
opportunities no matter what of his differences. The fact that the GP has consulted with a
nutritionist and a counsellor to make necessary changes to their lifestyle shows that they
are getting equal opportunities.
Use of Equality and Diversity with Brenda

1

,It's important to promote equality according to brenda as she is an elderly woman with
health and mental issues regarding that she would assistance in support with her needs
as that she would need to feel valued in a way that she knows the person cares for
them.A way equality was shown with Brenda is when The care plan took a person centred
approach with Brenda and the team to improve Brenda's Wellbeing.Another sign of
equality that took place with brenda was when the advocate spent some time with
Brenda in order to form a positive relationship.Equality and diversity to Brenda as she has
her individual needs such as her ability to not remember when to take her medication as
well as she is a severe asthmatic. Firstly Diversity is important to Brenda as she is an
elderly woman with health issues as Brenda is not the same as any other elderly woman
meaning that she is unique to herself and should be accepted into the community. As well
as diversity being promoted another thing that should be promoted is equality as Brenda
may be old but she is still the same and should receive the same opportunities as any
other and be treated accordingly to her needs. One impact if diversity and equality wasn't
promoted Brenda wouldn't feel welcomed and this could lead to her mental state
crushing down as she could feel depressed that shes not welcome to get her needs
treated responsibly as she wouldnt feel valued into society and could sadly lead into
suicide.
Use of Equality and Diversity with Maria

Health professionals must promote equality and diversity for Maria as she's in a
situation where she's teaching at a primary school and yet she's also taking care
of her Mother whose first immigration and due to her dementia she doesn't
remember english. They should Promote equality towards Maria and her mother
as she deserves the same opportunities as herself as an individual needs to
receive the same treatment accordingly to her needs.Even Though equality is one
thing they should promote diversity towards Maria as she's an individual with
different needs and regarding that she should feel safe and welcomed into the
workplace. As the GP was going through Marias records to find out that she's been
taking sleeping pills with no improvement and then proceeds to get Maria to see a
consultant shows an act of equality as shes getting the fair treatment she needs
as well as receiving the opportunity to do her own job.

compared to someone else for certain reasons. This can be because that

same way. However it has a worse effect on some people than others.
▪ Positive discrimination
This is when an individual is getting preferential treatment to people with an
individual characteristic.

Importance of preventing Discrimination

It is important to prevent discrimination as its crucial that everyone recicves the
same opportunity as others so that everyone gets the same service making it
equal. The possibilities of discrimination that can effect an individual is that it can
lead to one having anxiety, depression and it could even make them withdraw
their sleves from society as they would feel pressured and like eyes are peering at
them.

Explain how The Equality Act 2010 aims to preventing discrimination in
order to meet individual needs.
First of all what is The Equality act 2010 is the legal protection that protects
people from discrimination in a workplace or in the society.Previously it replaced
anti-discrimination within a single act making the law easier to understand for

needs

The first initiative is access this is when an individual may need a wheelchair as
they are disabled.Access is defined as a change in the environment to suit an
individual with needs such as ramps for those with wheelchairs. This prevents
discrimination as it makes the individual feel welcomed into the enviroment. The
