, The purpose of digital animation and effects
To understand their purpose and effectively use them first we must understand what digital
animation and effects are.
Animation is a word we use to describe bringing to life an object using various techniques.
Images that have been produced through a computer or have been hand drawn are played
in rapid succession of one another which gives the illusion that the figures on those
drawings/images are moving creating an illusion of motion. Animation can be created for
multiple different purposes for example education or for entertainment. When animation is
used for entertainment, it is created in a way so it can impact the viewer on a physiological
level to invoke feelings and trigger different emotions. Different genres exist for this reason
as different genres attract different people and can trigger different emotions and feelings
in different people. For example, the horror genre can trigger fear as well as shock,
nervousness, desperation and tension. These emotions and feelings may be unpleasant to
others but to some it helps immerse themselves within the movie. The greater the emotions
the animation can release the greater the immersion and experience the viewer will have.
There are other genres too such as action, romance and comedy which serve the purpose of
invoking different feelings and emotions within the viewer. Action would typically be viewed
by people who like the feeling of thrill, or a fast-paced experience filled with something
always keeping them on their toes. Romance on the other hand would be viewed by people
who like a slow built-up story that may have an unexpected plot twist. In essence all genres
exist to appeal to different types of people making animation appeal to everyone’s
preferences. Similarly digital effects are also added according to the genre of the animation.
Digital effects are not created without reason; they exist to emphasise and enhance scenes
to give them more of an impact on the viewer. For example, within action movies you would
have explosions and drum sounds to give the scenes for flare and suspense an effect that
cannot be replicated with images alone. Sound is an important topic within animation that
will be further discussed later within this report. Other genres such as romance and horror
too would have an effect to make their scenes more dramatic or for romance more
impactful and fulfilling. For example, within horror the director may choose to play some
menacing music or choose complete silence for a scene in preparation for a jump scare. The
point is effects exist to emphasise scenes and make them more impactful for the viewer.
Digital effects within animation makes the scenes feel complete. If you think of a movie that
you have watched in the past and think of a certain scene within that movie that you can
say was brilliant and was the peak of that movie, can you really say that after imagining it
without any digital effects. Digital effects not only exist to make scenes more visually
appealing but to make them complete.
, Digital effects are added in many types of digital media within the post products phase.
Some examples of digital effects would be explosions and morphing. Explosions are self-
explanatory so I shall discuss what morphing is. Morphing is a technique that changes one
image or shape into another through a seamless transition. I previously only talked about
entertainment as a form of media where animation is used but it is also used within
education. Why am I bringing this up now, because an effect like morphing can be used
within a video or movie meant for education purposes.

This link is a prime example of using morphing for education purposes and a video like this
would and could be used within schools. I could see this clip used within a science lesson or
an assembly.
Sound effects within all forms of animation are important because without sound you would
just be watching moving pictures and they wouldn’t nearly have as much effect as they
would with sound. Even if the non-sounded animation had subtitles it would make a
difference for an average person however for a person with a disability such as deafness
subtitles will help them immensely to understand and give them context for scenes. Also,
for people who are blind sound is important for them as they cannot rely on subtitles as
they cannot see they will rely on the sound being played and use that as a basis and use the
sound to help them know what is going on in the movie or tv show. Sound is important in all
forms of media from movies, games, advertising etc. Sound is such a natural thing for us we
never consider that it would be like watching a movie or to play a game without the sound.
No one would willingly watch a movie or play a game without sound because there is no
reason for those who can hear but if you were to perform one of these things without the
sound you would definitely not get the same experience if you did it with the sound even if
you did have subtitles.
To conclude, digital animation and effects are used in all forms of media within our current
world and will continue to exist and evolve getting better and better as time moves forward.
Digital animation and effects are not limited to any form of media and can be used for
anything such as: News, Education, Entertainment, Music videos, TV indents and even
Advertising. Digital animation also appears within our mobile devices with effects such as
fading menus and even an animated download bar.
