IT Project Management

Project management is the way of leading the work of a team so they can achieve all the project
goals within a time limit and also the specifications included in that project. The specifications for
the project are usually written inside the project documentation which is created on the beginning
of the development process plan. Depending on the type of project and also type of team there
could be different sets of rules and goals on which include the budged of the team and also the
time needed to publish the project and initialize it. Usually big projects never end because they
need to get updated regularly to meet the client’s and users’ requirements. A good example would
be a team developing a social media platform, in case the platform is successful the team would
obviously need to get engaged more with the projected meaning that they need to update the app
regularly to add more features that can attract more customers and potential investors. The 5 main
stages of project management include:
• Initiating
This is the first stage of the project on where the project needs to be reviewed by the clients
and the team and they will deem if the project is good to move on with. This stage is very
important since the potential investors need to know the feature and the scope about this
project and the chances it has to succeed and achieve their goals.
• Planning
During the planning state it is necessary to set up deadline dates so the team can meet them,
the project team manager needs to make the deadlines clear to everyone involved in the
project. Since you’re not certain when the project is going to get completely done the
deadline can be pushed or changed depending on how much work is done. It is also
important to outline which of the project methodology the team will be focused on which can
range from Agile, Waterfall, Prince2 and Rad. The planning stage also includes finding and
selecting the beast team that fits into the project, also selecting resources and equipment’s
that go into the project.
• Executing
This is the part where everything comes together in one place and its ready to be executed
on starting and creating the project. The project manager responsibility now is to monitor the
team and the resources so everything is up to date and plan, this way the team stays in the
tracks and makes sure that the project is smooth.
• Monitoring/Controlling
Referring to the project plan the manager now should be seeing where the team is at
currently and where the team is supposed to be. Checking the project timescale and
advancement is an important step to assure that the project is on the tracks to be delivered
on the set deadline. To do so the team members should be keeping a separate document on
where they will be tracking every step, accomplishment or goal created so far.
• Closing
Just as the name “Closing” suggests, this is the part where the team finishes up with
everything and are ready to close and deliver the project to the customer. Before the project
is delivered it is necessary to see that all the goal that the client wants have been achieved
and are up to date with modern standards. The team should also try to deliver a document
which finalizes the project and shows what went right and wrong within the project so the
customers know everything about their product.

Project Methodology
A project management methodology is a set of different principles, uses and practices that can
guide you and your team to creating a successful project and achieving all the set goal. There are
different types of project methodologies you can use depending on the type of project you are
working on. Some methodologies can include:

Waterfall
Waterfall is one of the most traditional methodologies that has been in use since the beginning of
the 1970s. Reason for calling it a waterfall is because its linear and sequential design approach
only flows in one way just like a real waterfall. Waterfall also mentions a lot about the importance
of documenting every step of your project so everyone that comes new to the team can know the
steps that have been done and get more familiar with them. Waterfall can be best suited for large
scale projects where a lot of people are working on and there are a set of deadlines where the
team needs to meet. The 6 phases included on waterfall are:
• Requirement
In the first phase is when the purpose, design and function of the project is understood and
recorded. The requirements plan will also need to get investigated and reviewed by the
leader and the stakeholders of the project.
• Design
The design stage includes the documents from the first stage and what options or settings
are on it. By that the team can determine the best and most efficient design that includes all
those requirements. This is also known as design document.
• Implementation
After everything checks out the team is good to go and can start to execute the design for
the project. The team will try to stay and fulfil the specifications, requirements and also the
timeline that is set. In case the project is complex the team will try to determine the best
timeline for it and push it if necessary.
