P1 - EXPLAIN HOW HEALTH AND
SAFETY MEASURES IN A SCIENTIFIC
ORGANIZATION COMPLY WITH
LEGISLATION.
In this section of the assignment I will discuss how the NHS as an
organization implements certain measures in order to comply with the
health and safety act 1974. The certain legislation’s the NHS have developed
in order to ensure they comply with the health and safety laws will be
discussed.
What is the NHS (introduction)
The NHS is the national health service of the UK. The
organization is responsible for providing quality health
care and medical attention to the national public with
no fees. In order to meet these requirements the NHS is
government funded via the taxes of individuals who
contribute. The origins of this organization trace back
to 1948 founded by Aneurin Bevan and has been a successfully operating
company till this day. The NHS offers a range of services from community
based services, hospital based services as well as primary care. The NHS
abide by and strongly empathize these principles ; to provide comprehensive
service to all individuals, to be up to the highest standards as well as put the
patient at the heart of every work they undergo. Since they are the main
,healthcare service provider in the United Kingdom it is significant for them to
produce legislations within their company that directly abides by the health
and safety act 1948 in order to ensure the safety of all their employees,
employers as well as the general public who are utilizing these services
provided by the organization. In order to make sure the NHS is abiding by
these legislations the HSE will monitor this. Below is the statement of intent.
The statement of intent highlights that the NHS as an organization that is
responsible for the heath and safety of many individuals recognizes that
abiding with the health and safety work act 1974 Is a legal requirement in
which they will have to enforce no matter what. Below I will discuss certain
laws and legislations they follow in order to implement and provide a safe
working environment additionally while abiding by the health and safety act
1974.
Risk assessment
Ever since the initiation of the COVID-19 pandemic the UKHSE have
generated certain outlines which are too be followed by organizations such
as the NHS. The guidelines state that a risk assessment of individual
employees should be undertaken by employers. These individual employees
have to fall under a vulnerable category who are more likely to be affected by
the risk of covid-19. Such vulnerable people include older employees,
pregnant employees, unvaccinated employees, employees with certain health
conditions which would be life threatening for them if contracted COVID-19
and a range of other infectious complications. Once the employees have been
identified as apart of this category a risk assessment will take place. The

, employer who is responsible for the health of the employee at the work place
will discuss the risk assessment and medical conditions they have. The nhs
recognize the risk assessment is vital so that the employer can undertake the
correct steps/route in order to protect the employees who are eligible for the
risk assessment. The NHS complies with the health and safety act 1974 by
undertaking the risk assessment since the health and safety act states that
employers need to take certain precautions to safeguard other employees
and in order to abide by this a risk assessment should take place. The risk
assessment allows the employers to safeguard the vulnerable employee since
it underlines the risk and the steps they would need to take in order to
minimize the risk.
Providing PPE (personal protective equipment)
Secondly the distribution of PPE (personal protective equipment) is
implemented by the NHS as a health and safety measure in order to abide by
the health and safety act 1974. The health and safety act 1974 highlights that
all employers are liable to provide an adequate quantity of PPE to their
employers with no costs involved. Employees who are at risk of being
affected by the risks involved with the work they carry out should be
provided with PPE by their employer so that they receive beneficial
protection against such risks. Additionally the maintenance of the PPE
provided by the employer is the responsibility of the employer. PPE the nhs
provides for their employers to be utilized involves a range of PPE. Such PPE
includes face coverings, gloves, safety goggles and many others. Due to the
COVID-19 pandemic the demand for PPE in the NHS has increased drastically
but despite this demand the NHS recognizes that no matter what
circumstances the employers must be provided with PPE as a behalf of their
responsibility to comply with the health and safety act 1974.
DSE (display screen equipment)
Within all the NHS organizations, such as GP practices, hospitals, dental
practices display screen equipment will be utilized by a numerous amount of
employees, wether that is to check health records or obtain patient data from
