Unit 2
D1- Analyze the benefits of understanding diversity in relation to health and social care
Having a diverse society brings people together through different cultures. Allowing
language skills, different foods, insights of other cultures' lives. It gives us the opportunity to
learn different skills from people of different backgrounds. For example, having health care
professionals from different countries will allow communication with patients from other
countries to be possible. And new methods of care will be shown to try and improve the
way care is currently done. Understanding diversity can cause independence, inclusion of
people from different backgrounds, equality, respect, dignity, participation for everyone no
matter their differences and it promotes anti-discriminatory practice. I will know talk about
the benefits and how they have a good effect on the health and social care industry.
Employment
Employment is a great benefit because of diversity as it has allowed employment for people
migrating from other countries for a better life. Which can then provide the public with
more services due to more jobs being provided An example of how diversity has helped
employment could be. Currently, the NHS is a widely diverse organization with people from
many different backgrounds. This is because having diversity has accepted people no matter
their pasts and cultures providing more job roles for people from different countries. From
this, more skills are learned and developed and new specialist medical equipment is
imported to support service users. Different perspectives from different individuals will
allow better ideas to be created which could improve how care is provided. This also
benefits the health care workers, as they will build relationships with other staff members of
different backgrounds because of diversity. A disadvantage to being diverse in employment
could be more discrimination. This could be because of the patients not wanting to be
looked after by someone from a different country or staff members not wanting to work
with someone who is different. Causing conflicts or arguments.
Inclusion
Inclusion in the workplace and in health care environments causes all employees and
patients to feel accepted and valued. As they will all be included in activities with everyone
else. When service users and health care employees feel accepted they will provide a good
standard of care so service users will use the service again. People from all different
backgrounds are included no matter their differences they could be disabled or be from a
different country. Inclusion gives people a sense of belonging no matter their differences,
which will have effects such as their work improving and the building of relationships with
other professionals. An effect of exclusion could cause people who are disabled or from a
different country, less opportunity of many things like training or activities which could
make them feel less fortunate or discriminated against because of their differences. Also
without diversity, these excluded individuals will not be recognized as unique that could
lead to them being discriminated against.
, Equality
Equality means being equal no matter age, gender, religion, social class, race, disability or
sexual orientation but not all the same as we all have different needs. In health and social
care, equality is demonstrated by allowing equal pay between health care professionals
doing the same role. With allowing equality prevents discrimination as people are treated
fairly. An example of equality and how to keep it could be. Two residents at a care home
both female and the same age are given an idea of what foods are on the menu they are
given the same food choices as one and other and pick the foods they like. Just by doing this
will be allowing equality because the two residents are both given the same choice so
neither of them are left out or restricted from picking a certain food. By maintaining
equality, they feel respected and cared for. Without equality, people would not be given the
same opportunities as others because they might be different. Equality is a benefit to
diversity because it ensures that everyone has access to the same opportunities and fair
treatment allowing a good standard of care being provided.
Respect
Diversity allows individuals to be treated fairly and not judged because of their differences.
When diversity is understood everyone has mutual respect for one and improving
relationships and quality of work. Respect is the way you choose to treat someone and
respect is shown by being polite and kind. Respect is shown to a service user by treating
them fairly and with dignity when caring for them. It is important to have respect between a
service user and health care professional to make sure that a good level of care is provided.
Giving the service user a good experience. An example of showing a service user respect
could be. A man from Kenya breaks his arm while on holiday with his family. He goes to the
hospital and needs to rest in bed. The nurse supports him by putting a cast on and is polite
to the man showing respect by providing him with treatment. This is an example of having
respect because the nurse shows that they care by giving them treatment. If the nurse was
to refuse to give them treatment this would be discrimination and disrespecting them by
not providing them with care. Respect is a benefit to diversity because when someone is
respected it shows that they are not being singled out because of their differences and
diversity is accepting someone’s differences. However, if they were disrespected this would
be treating them differently because of who they are which is discrimination.
Dignity
Dignity is being valued and respected for who you are, what you believe in, and how you
live. Treating people with dignity means treating them the way you would like to be treated
by someone. If you act without dignity towards someone, you could not be providing them
with cutlery to eat their food or giving bibs to an elderly resident instead of a napkin. This is
not respecting a person’s dignity as to show respect to them you would give them cutlery
and napkin to show them you respect them. This could make them feel childish, sad or
mistreated. Therefore, to show dignity you could let them pick their own clothes or address
them properly by their name. Dignity is a benefit to diversity because individuals are given a
choice no matter their differences and respected no matter their choices.
