European Union

The European Union started of very small, when it has started to cooperate economically in
1951, there were only 6 countries involved this included Germany, Italy, France, Belgium,
Luxembourg and the Netherlands. But then over time more and more counties decided to
join the European Union as they had seen the benefits of being part of it. This is why there
are 28 counties currently joined with the EU which also includes counties like the United
Kingdom, Austria, Czech Republic and Cyprus etc. The European Union works as a single
market that allows things such as having free movement of goods, services and people
between the member states. But on the other hand to be a part of the European Union, the
countries so have to pay to be a part of it, this is why there are many advantages and
disadvantages of being part of the EU. However majority of countries do want to be a part
of the EU as it is easy to trade between the counties. There are number of institutions
within the European Union some include The European Council, The European Commission,
The European Parliament and The Court of Justice of the European Union.

The European Council

The European Council is the main body of the EU, there are 28 commissioners who sit in the
council they are the leaders of the states for example David Cameron would represent the
United Kingdom, when they need to make a decision they all meet up in Brussels. But the
council do not make new laws but they mainly focus on the important policies and make
improvements in the EU. The EU council discuss different matters during a meeting, the
types of discussion they have already had are about the disaster that had occurred in japan,
the crisis in Libya and about the euro. The previous president of the European council was
Herman van Rompuy but he had now been replaced and the former president is Donald
Tusk. The council would be expected to meet up 5 to 6 times a year but they do all meet up
at least 4 times every year. The main role for the council is so that the council can provide
the broad lines and priorities for the European Union policies.

The European Commission

The European Commission which is like the ‘engine room’, within this there are also 28
commissioners who are a part of it, each from a member state for instance Jonathan Hill is
the commissioner for the United Kingdom. The commissioners would construe the strategy
that had been put ahead by the European Council and set forth suggestions new laws for
European Parliament. When they need to have a meeting, they would all meet up in
Brussels and the former president of the European commission is Jean Claude Junker. The
commission have two roles, their role is to propose new legislations to the European
