12.1: (D1)Acid - base levels rise and fall
Acid - base balance is known as the bloods acidity and alkalinity degree which is one of the
important properties of blood. The pH scale determines the acidity and alkalinity of the
blood. When the levels of acidic compounds in the blood is increased, the levels of acidity
increases. The levels of acidity also increases when alkaline compound levels in the blood
decreases. For alkalinity, when the levels of acidity decreases then the levels of alkalinity
increases, and when alkaline compound levels in the blood decreases then alkalinity levels
decrease. The cells become poisoned and also toxic which causes the cells to die if the pH
keeps changing directions. This can also cause different types of diseases including gaining
of weight. The disorders of acid - base balance are caused by a bad diet and stress which
causes inflammation. The inflammation of the body can also lead to other diseases including
cancer, stokes and heart diseases.
On the other hand, a good acid - base balance and blood pH levels can aid in maintaining
healthy cholesterol levels, healthy blood glucose levels, increasing metabolism to help
digest our food properly, ability to remove waste products and toxins and also to keep the
heart healthy. The blood pH balance can also get affected by oxygen intake and diet. The
breaking down of foods leaves behind certain metabolic substances and chemicals. This
then fuses with body fluid and starts to give out either alkali or acid potentials of pH. Other
substances like the release of cortisol and aldosterone can cause sleep deprivation and
inflammation. These substances can be released by an uncontrollable adrenal gland. If the
hormone aldosterone is released into the bloodstream, then the large amounts of
potassium as well as magnesium is released into the urine.
Acid - base disorders - Acidosis
The pH of blood would drop if there is too much acid in the blood or very little base.
Acidosis is caused by too much blood acidity in the blood. It is also caused by losing
bicarbonate from the blood or slow breathing which is caused by the lungs not functioning
well. The increase of carbon dioxide in the blood causes the lungs to function poorly.
Acid - base disorders - Alkalosis
The pH of blood would rise if there is too much base in the blood or very little acid. Alkalosis
is the opposite of acidosis and so is caused by having too much bicarbonate in the blood. It
is also caused by losing acid from the blood or heavy breathing which is caused by low levels
of carbon dioxide in the blood. The decrease of carbon dioxide causes an increase in heavy
breathing.
