PLAN: Analyse the significance of the telling of stories within any noveltaught on the course so far.
Argument:
Therefore, throughout this essay I will make the case that, within the
novel Room, the telling of stories is significant in allowing the reader to
understand the struggles of characters, but only to an extent as the
narrator remains unreliable.
Topic sentences:
1. The significance of telling stories within the novel Room can be
seen through how Jack learns, and with each story he tells they
become more intellectual and imaginative, conveying how Jack
narration of storytelling allows him to enthuse his learning.
2. Following from this, telling stories is also significant within Room,
as it highlights the breakdown and lack of reality for ‘Ma’ and
‘Jack’.
3. Alternatively, I also believe the significance of telling stories within
Room is limited by Jack as a narrator; due to his age and rare
circumstances, he acts as a unreliable narrator, leaving the reader
to establish what is real and what Jack has made up, as often the
idea of storytelling, is purely fictional.
