Introduction:
Health and Safety Legislation:
Prior to 1974, "roughly 8 million employees had no legal safety protection at work,"
according to the health and safety legislation, which was established with royal
assent on July 31, 1974. [1] The Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974 establishes
a "legal framework for promoting, stimulating, and encouraging high standards of
health and safety in the workplace." [1] It safeguards employees and the general
public from potentially hazardous workplace practices.
Employers, employees, trainees, self-employed, manufacturers, suppliers,
designers, and importers of work equipment all have an obligation to comply with the
Act'[1].
Employers must comply with the act since it is their obligation to keep their
employees safe. They must ensure that all employees are equipped with personal
protective equipment (PPE) and that a risk assessment is conducted prior to
performing the activity to minimise any hazards.
Employees also have their own obligations, including taking care of their own health
and "not interfering with anything supplied in the benefit of health and safety"[1].
