Task 1: Promoting anti-discriminatory practice
Importance of promoting Equality, Diversity and Anti-Discrimination. P1 M1 D1 Equality,
Diversity and Discrimination
Equality:
Equality defined by Billingham et al means that everyone has equal access to the services they
need, that is receiving a service of equal quality that meets their personal needs, no matter
where they live or how they live their lives. Promoting equality is extremely important in health
and social care settings as this is where there are vulnerable people meaning because of their
age they could be negatively talked to and be disadvantaged from it. Promoting equality is
important in health and social care settings because it can improve everyone’s trust in one
another, knowing that they won’t get treated different for who they are (Age, Lifestyle, Race,
Gender, Beliefs etc…). Having a good background of promoting equality and treating staff and
patients with the respect they deserve, can create trust between one another, this is good as it
will create a positive impact in your work setting and leaving people happy and safe.

Diversity:
Diversity, also defined by Billingham et al, simply means a variety or range of differences. To
value diversity is to respect and value the cultures and beliefs of other people. If you are
unwilling to do this, and so dismiss or ignore the cultures and beliefs of others, you will be
unable to learn about them or from them. Similarly, you must respect and value differences
such as age, gender, and disability. It is a legal requirement for health and social care
organisations to respect and value all individuals. Diversity in health and social care is important
as it conveys many positives for the workers and patients. Promoting diversity in health and
social care settings, is an important thing to do as it ensures people that they are valued in their
work setting. It also creates a positive impact on staff as it will lead them to a good relationship
between one another and make them work better and respect and enjoy their work setting.
Another reason is it creates the trust of knowing that everyone has the same access and
opportunities in life to what they want to work as.

Use of equality and diversity with Valerie:
Using equality and diversity with Valerie, it is highly important that health professionals
promote equality and diversity with her as she had been admitted into a community hospital.
Due to Valerie being obese and a vegetarian, it’s important that she is given the right meals to
meet her vegetarian needs and obese needs and for this, a dietician should be recommended
to give her a healthy meal that is also vegetarian. A dietician working with Valerie wouldn’t
judge her for her weight or make her feel different, they would make her feel safe and that she

,can trust her with them as they want the best for her and to make her be healthy in a way that
can work for her and to also show her and tell her the benefits of a healthy lifestyle that she can
work around to help her obesity. If the health professionals met Valerie’s needs and they
worked for Valerie as well, this would improve her physical and mental health by having
support around her and the knowledge of the healthy lifestyle, This will also teach her how to
lose weight as she’ll get a lot of information about this and the right things to eat and how to do
exercises properly to target weight loss. From having the information and encouragement of
losing weight from professionals, this could have a good impact on her mental health by making
her think happier thoughts and see the reason of living healthier as this could stop the bullying
and then she would want to go back home and feel much more confident. It will make a
difference for her by making her feel valued and respected which can improve her self-esteem
and her confidence. If equality and diversity isn’t being promoted for Valerie, then she would
feel unheard and feel like nobody wants to help her. Having this mindset will impact her mental
health more as she has nobody to help her issues and help her to improve her life. Valerie can
have legalisations covered because of her issues such as the Mental Capacity Act (2005). This
act contains safeguards called the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards or DoLls, which are there to
protect people who lack mental capacity and who are unable to look after or maintain their
own independence, dignity, and their right to freedoms. The Mental Capacity Act cares for
people who struggle to make their own decisions; it protects them whilst fostering an
environment where they can be as independent as possible.

Use of Equality and Diversity with Aisha:
The use of equality and diversity being promoted with Aisha, should be promoted by the health
professionals as she was admitted to the hospital to recover from a bout of pneumonia. Aisha
may lack capacity due to her dementia, so the Mental Capacity Act 2005 would be suitable for
her. This is because it’s made to protect people like Aisha who would struggle to make
decisions of her own care and treatments. It covers people’s decisions from day-to-day things
such as what to buy or wear or maybe even life changing like moving into a care/residential
home. Due to Aisha’s vascular dementia, it should be recommended that there is a professional
there that knows everything about Aisha, such as her beliefs, disabilities, background, diet etc,
this is as she may forget what she believes in for example as it is important that she is respected
for he religious beliefs. In this case there should be an advocate with Aisha to speak for her in
personal meetings or to staff about herself if she ever forgets anything about herself and to
speak to Aisha, get to know her and if Aisha ever needs to speak about her opinions on
anything, they should know and get that sorted or told to someone to see if there is anything
they can do different to respect her. Equality and diversity is important in meeting Aisha’s
personal needs as it can lead to unfair discrimination maybe because of her dementia or her
beliefs and it’s important for the health care professionals to all be aware of it and anyone to
come into contact with Aisha so she doesn’t receive any negative comments that can impact

, her or make her feel like she can’t trust or communicate with anyone. The possible impacts of
equality and diversity not being promoted for Aisha can lead to her to being upset and angry as
she requires constant changing, so not being heard by health professionals, or not being
changed constant can make her feel upset and unimportant. It can affect her mental health
because she will feel like she isn’t being listened to due to her problems when realistically
nobody should feel this way especially in a hospital as all patients should be treated with
respect.

Discrimination:
Discrimination to Billingham et al, is when someone has a prejudice against a person or a group
of people. This might be for reasons such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, social class, religious
beliefs, sexuality, ability, health, disability, address, appearance. They might then discriminate
against that person or group and treat them differently. There are four types of discrimination
which are: Unfair discrimination, direct discrimination, indirect discrimination, and positive
discrimination. An example of unfair discrimination is when someone is not considered for a job
because they are older than another candidate, despite having the same qualifications and
experience. An example of direct discrimination is when someone who is overweight is called
names. An example of indirect discrimination is a manager may appear to be supportive and
friendly towards a member of staff but may show disrespect for their ideas by dismissing them
in a jokey way. An example of positive discrimination is when an advertising agency seeks to
hire a person who has red hair and fair skin because they are to play the part of a sister of
someone who has these characteristics; or when a service has few people from an ethnic
minority at a certain level, so they appoint someone from that ethnic minority.

Importance of preventing discrimination:
It is crucial to prevent discrimination because it protects people’s rights as everyone deserves
to have the same opportunities and to be treated the same. Also, so everyone receives a
service of equal quality which will fit in with their personal needs. If someone is discriminating
someone, it can have short term effects and long term effects of people. Some short-term
effects include embarrassment, intimidation, awkwardness, anger, withdrawal, avoidance,
offensive and acceptance. Some long-term effects include isolation, low self-worth, low self-
esteem, depression, self-loathing, aggression/crime, suicide, avoiding health care and avoiding
social care. The Equality Act 2010 is the requirement by the government to the public to legally
protect people from discrimination in the workplace and in their lives. People are protected on
these types of discrimination: race, age, sex, disability, belief or religion, sexual orientation,
marriage or civil partnership and gender reassignment. Age discrimination is when someone is
treated unfairly due to their age. Race discrimination is where someone is being treated
unfairly because of the colour of your skin. Sex discrimination, also known as gender
