interactions that determine distribution and abundance’.

environment’.

How can ecologists help the governments plan for the future of the UK’s
environment?

1. Assess the state of nature.

2. Predict the changes in the environment.

3. Predict the likely changes that environment will have on nature.

4. Propose and implement plans to minimise *mitigate) changes in the environment
and nature.

At each stage, scientific methods in evidence gathering needs to be used, along
with prediction and management.

The UK government’s 25 year environment plan (2018):

2. Recovering nature and enhancing the beauty of landscapes.

3. Securing clean, productive and biologically diverse seas and oceans.

4. Connecting people with the environment in order to improve health and well-

In Britain - two of the most important organisations for professional ecologists are
BES and CIEEM.

The British ecological society (BES) is one of the world’s largest ecology societies
and started in 1913, it is all ecological scientists and there is a 12 month free
membership for students.

The chartered institute of ecology and environmental management (CIEEM)
promotes the highest standards of practice for the benefit of nature and society.
