Unit 10: World Energy
Learning Aim B: Investigate energy demands
Populations will require more energy as countries develop. Because of this the
availability of products will increase due to the advances in technology
requiring more energy. Population growth is important because the Earth’s
ability affects the climate change withstanding and absorbing the emissions
from human activity such as through land re-use.
Population growth is a demand for more energy, as well as for the industrial
growth and more of the transportation technologies that are also demands for
more energy.

Consequently, the overall environmental impact of the three would go up in
the absence of adequate mitigation of the environmental impacts of their in-
creased consumption of natural resources, industrial goods, and energy, or not
go up in the presence of adequate mitigation of the same.

Most countries' main strategies in the face of rising energy shortages and
environmental problems are to develop and use renewable energy, promote
the construction of a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system
dominated by renewable energy, adopt energy-saving and emission-reduction
strategies, and develop renewable energy technologies. China's present energy
system has given an unending source of stimulus for its economic growth.
According to OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development)
figures, China has overtaken the United States as the world's greatest primary
energy consumer and emitter of greenhouse gases.
Excluding hydro, renewables make up only a few percentage points of total en-
ergy consumption. I exclude hydro, as there is very little room to expand it, and
it mostly predates massive use of fossil fuels for electricity generation, so it is
not particularly indicative of any potential to displace fossil fuels.

Currently, the renewable energy that has been added to the energy mix to dis-
place fossil fuel could not even be called a good start.

Renewable energy (wind, water, solar and nuclear) is primarily used to
generate electricity.
