Unit 10: World Energy
Learning Aim C: Explore future energy sources and energy storage

 Carbon capture and sequestration
 NextGen nuclear power
 Nuclear fusion
 Offshore wind
 Geothermal
 Space technologies
 Solar fuels
Future energy will come directly from the sun and radioactive materials. Fossil fuel is only an
inefficient energy storage. There is plenty of sun energy. There are 2 different ways to con-
vert sun energy into electricity. One is to produce electricity directly using photovoltaic cells.
The disadvantage of this method is:

1) an energy storage is needed because the sun energy can be tapped from a fixed place for
only 8 hours per day or less.

2) the battery inside an electric car is too heavy.

3) it takes times to charge a battery. The other way is to use the sun energy to produce hy-
drogen out of water. The fuel cell electric car carries hydrogen tanks which are way lighter
than battery. Electricity is produced by reacting back hydrogen and oxygen.

The problem with this hydrogen energy is 70% of sun energy is lost during the conver-
sion process from water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Energy that we use in homes and businesses come from burning fossil fuels which produce
electricity. Greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere which leads to global
warming. By reducing the amount of energy, we use helps reduce the need to burn fossil
fuels which makes it a healthier environment for our planet. Switching off lights and turning
off appliances helps reduce energy consumption.
 Spend less time in the shower
 Draught-proof windows and doors
 Turning off lights
 Being careful with washing
 Insulation
