The aims of the European Union
The aims of the EU
The aims of the EU are set out in article 3 of the EU treaty. They include:

Promoting peace and the EU’s values

Establishing a single European market

Promoting economic, social and territorial cohesion

Establishing an economic monetary union

Establishing an area of freedom, security and justice without internal frontiers

Combating discrimination and promoting equality

The EU’s values
The EU is founded on the values of ‘human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality,
the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of minorities.’
The values of the EU have helped to imbed liberal ideals in former authoritarian or
communist rule.

A single European market
‘An area without internal frontiers in which the free movement of goods, services,
persons and capital is ensured’
The four freedoms involve:

Free movement of goods. Members cannot impose tax or duties on goods
from another EU state, physical and technical barriers at borders for example
are also minimised.

Free movement of services. Professionals, businesses etc can establish and
offer their service in other EU states, qualifications across all EU countries are
recognised.
