,Caregiver-infant interactions
Reciprocity:
 this is a close two way bond of attachment that is
Reciprocated by both baby and mother
 It endures over time and I need to behaviours such as
Clinginess and proximity seeking - this leads to the
mother protecting the infant
 Babies play a active role in attachment not passive
 Fieldman & fieldman - mothers usually respond to there
child 2/3 of the time
 This has been described as a dance

Interactional synchrony:
 Emotions of infant and caregiver are mirrored
 Isabella Et al - He research 30 mothers and babies, he
found direct correlation between high synchroneity and
better attachment
 Meltzoff and Moore - Found babies as young as two weeks
would respond to an adults Facial Expressions. When a
adult showed this emotion.

✅ Filmed in lab conditions - They record these experiments so
they could be analysed early today and nothing would be
missed. This increased the internal validity of this experiment
❌ Socially sensitive - This puts immense pressure on women to
stay at home with their children all day long if it forms better
attachment in the long term. Suggesting this research has an
effect on society beyond the research.
❌ What is the purpose - Interactional synchrony has no
expressed Advantage and it can’t be proven to have an
evolutionary advantage
❌ Limited insight - When studying babies we can’t be sure of
what their internal processes are actually doing so assuming a
baby is copying a parent could be invalid because they’re
actually doing something else

, Stages of attachment - Schaffer
and Emerson
