D.P7 explains how scientific information in a workplace laboratory is recorded and processed to meet the needs
of the customer and to ensure traceability.
Different types of data in scientific workplace
Data is the collection of facts and data used for reference or analysis. In industries such as science, data is
important as it provides a sense of stability and uniformity. As a result, there are different types of data
available, with different types of collection methods which comply by the security and traceability. Here are
different types of methods that are collected in scientific workplace.
Scientific apparatus: in scientific industries, scientific apparatus refers to different types of equipment and
instruments and is used on a day-to-day basis. It is important to track and maintain detailed records for the
scientific apparatus. Important details include date of purchase, schedules, and data regarding the instruments.
Not only is it a great way of tracking financials but also helps track the durability of the equipment, which
allows the organization to ensure that equipment is always in optimal working condition. This is usually
complied with by scientific laboratories that track the usage and availability of equipment.
Health and safety checks: Another essential type of data crucial in laboratory setting is health and safety checks.
This is essential to avoid any sort of accident or injuries to any laboratory personnels. In addition, it is by laws
and legislation that all laboratories and workplaces must comply with health and safety checks. These include
data regarding any health and safety concerns but information and logs around regular inspections, risk
assessment, and safety audits which are carried out to identify and mitigate any potential hazards.
Training records: all laboratories tend to collect training records for staff and personals that compose the
workplace. This is regarding health and safety and for the employee's benefit. It is mandatory that all personals
at a laboratory are trained to perform processes, react to emergencies, and carry out procedures after identifying
risk and aiming to control them. Training records are recorded by the scientific laboratory to provide evidence
that they are trained employees, to avoid situations where the workplace can be charged for malpractice.
Waste disposal: this enables store employees to keep track of the price of replacing or purchasing equipment or
chemical compounds. This is also mandatory to know how much waste is produced and its significant to
industries such as manufactures for equipment and chemicals and its impact on environmental issues. In
addition, it allows experts to determine how much specific lab equipment, such as beakers, should be accessible
based on waste disposal and whether waste reduction is a priority necessity.
Methods of storing data

storage data is recorded and One advantage of physical data is that it is easily accessible. This
stored in different types means it is a tangible format allowing it to be accessed and
of physical manner, referred to by laboratory personnel easily.
examples include paper Another advantage of physical storage is that it is tangible and
records, lab books, easy to access. This is because physical data provides a tangible
documents, and paper format which means that it can easily be stored in filing cabinets
receipts. or even shelves. Hence making it very easy to refer to or access.
Another advantage of physical storage is that there is no risk of
data loss. This means that unlike other formats of storage such as
electronic and cloud there is less likely a risk of data loss from
factors such as technical failure.

Disadvantages
One disadvantage with physical data is the fact that it can easily
be lost or stolen. This is because having paper records and lab
notes means it is prone to damage by physical accidents such as
fire, environment, or other conditions. In addition, physical items
are more likely to be stolen.
Another disadvantage of using physical data is that it is hard to
search and retrieve as regardless of organization, there are many
files, documents, and data at a point where locating specific data
can be time consuming and challenging.
Another disadvantage of physical data is that it is usually limited
by storage capacities. This means that there is a limit of physical
data to be stored and makes it harder therefore to store large
data.
Another issue with physical data is that it limits the user by
factors such as traceability and accountability. This means
without proper tracking mechanism such as logs to keep track of
origin and modification.
