A-level WJEC Psychology - model answer to the cultural bias controversy in psychology. This source consists of a breakdown of what to include in each paragraph (a summary of my complete model answer).
Define ‘culture’ —> the rules, customs, morals and ways of interacting that bind together
members of a society.
Define ‘cultural bias’ —> when members of a particular culture (group of people) make
assumptions based on their own norms and values from their culture.
Traditional psych = founded on western ideas —> culturally biased.
, PARA 2
Define ‘ethnocentrism’ —> when one idea is seen from one cultural prospective, and
that this is correct and anything other than this view is not.
Example in psych = Ainsworth’s ‘The Strange Situation’
Explain what this was —> developed to investigate attachment types.
Researchers assumed that this had the same meaning for infants in different cultures
(the same meaning as American children).
German children —> demonstrated higher insecure-avoidant behaviour.
NOT that German mothers = more insensitive than American ones.
INSTEAD, they value + encourage independent behaviour in their children.
SO children react differently in the Strange Situation.
Problem as psychologists may assume there = actual diff. in attachment in diff. cultures.
NOT the case.
‘Alpha bias’
My lead to stereotyping or prejudice and discrimination against certain cultures.
