Required Practical 5
Dissection of a Mammalian Heart

Dissection of animal or plant gas exchange or mass transport system or organ within
such a system.

The heart is a pump that is a part of the double circulatory system so blood can travel
around the body providing oxygen+nutrients as well as carrying away waste such as carbon
dioxide. The heart is composed of cardiac tissue with four chambers: left and right atrium
and left and right ventricle. The left side carries oxygenated blood around the body and the
right side receives deoxygenated blood.

The aim of this experiment is to identify/investigate the external and internal features of a
mammalian heart.

Apparatus
● Sheep's heart
● Scalpel
● Dissecting tray/board
● Apron
● Gloves
● Disinfectant spray
● Tweezers
● Disposal bag

Safety precautions need to be ensured including wearing adequate hand and eye protection
( gloves, goggles), a lab coat/apron and caution while handling a scalpel and/or scissors.

Experiment
Begin by examining the exterior and finding the coronary arteries and if possible the valves
in the aorta and the pulmonary artery. Then use the scalpel to cut open the left atrium and
ventricle and the right atrium and ventricle. You will then be able to see the tendinous cords
which hold onto the atrioventricular valves. You will find that the walls of the atria are much
thinner as they do not need to pump as hard-they are only pumping blood to the ventricles.
On the other hand ventricles have thicker, muscular walls to enable bigger contraction,
furthermore it is thickest near the cardiac base. You can either use pins and sticky
notes or take images and edit them to label it.
Disposing
All equipment should be put in a beaker with disinfectant. The apron-if plastic-gloves
and heart etc should go in a disposal bag. The surface used should then be cleaned
with disinfectant spray.
