M1 Report
Date: 03.05.16
Subject: Explain how the management of human, physical & technological resources
can improve the performance of a selected organisation.
In this report, I will be explaining how the management of human, physical &
technological resources can improve the performance of Tesco.
Physical Resources
The management of physical resources can also improve the performance of Tesco
in many ways. One of these ways is by ensuring that the location of the buildings is
suitable and beneficial to Tesco’s. By suitable and beneficial, I mean the location of
the building should be convenient enough for the customers to be able to easy
access it. The location will determine how many customers shop at the store. If the
location was in an appropriate place, for example near houses and estates, then it
will increase the traffic of customers which would also increase the chances of
customers going into the store and spending their money. This would in turn
increase the company’s profits because if more people are spending their money,
then it means that Tesco’s revenue will also increase which ultimately improves the
performance of the business. But, if the location of the supermarket was in an
inappropriate place, for example near a sewage plant, then it will discourage
customers to go and shop at the store. Instead they would go to rival competitors
and shop there because the location would be more ideal. If customers are not
shopping at that location, then it means that Tesco would be losing money because
they are not making any revenue. This would force them to take action and relocate
their store to a more appropriate venue. But the problem with changing location is
that the organisation needs to spend extra money which they may struggle to find. If
they do have the spare cash to fund the move, it would still have a massive impact
on the performance of the organisation because moving location means that the
business would be losing money each day until they manage to re-open their new
store. This is because for all the time that the company is taking to find a new
location and then refurbish it, they could have been making a profit if they had
chosen an appropriate location to begin with.
Insurance is another factor which Tesco needs to manage. All their buildings and
facilities would need to be covered under insurance so that the business is protected
in the event that somethings happens to or within the building. This could be a fire or
a flood. If the building is insured and an event like this occurs, then the insurance
provider will pay out a sum of money, depending on the policy type, to Tesco so that
they can try and recover their losses. Using the money from the insurance pay out,
Tesco will be able to pay to get the building repaired and ready for business again.
There will be a loss of customers during the time that the building is inactive, but the
insurance money would usually compensate for that.
The management of Health and Safety within the organisation is also extremely
important to how the business performs. If the physical resources department are not
maintaining and ensuring that there are appropriate health and safety procedures,
