Introduction:
This assignment is on the digestive system. The digestive system is the breakdown of food into smaller and
smaller components, until they can be absorbed and assimilated into the body . The digestion system has
different parts to it as it is not just 1 organ taking part in this. The human digestive system consists of
the gastrointestinal tract and the accessory organs of digestion such as the tongue, salivary glands,
pancreas, liver, and gallbladder. Digestion involves the breakdown of food into small components, until
they can be absorbed and conformed into the body.

Impact on health of nutritional deficiency disorders & treatments used:
Irritable bowel syndrome: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects the
digestive system. It affects the colon (the large intestine). The colon's main job is to absorb water and
nutrients from partially digested food. When this happens, a person can feel the belly cramps, bloating,
constipation, and diarrhoea that may be signs of IBS. These tend to come and go over time, and can last
for days, weeks or months at a time. It's usually a lifelong problem. It can be very frustrating to live with
and can have a big impact on your everyday life. The exact cause for this condition is unkno wn but its been
linked to things like food passing trough your guts too quickly or to slo wly, oversensitive nerves in your
guy, stress and a family history of IBS. There isn’t a cure at the moment but diet changes and medicines
can often help control the symptoms. If you’ve been diagnosed with IBS your GP may ask you to :
- Cook homemade meals using fresh ingredients when you can.
- Keep a diary of what you eat and any symptoms you get – try to avoid things that trigger your IBS .
- Try to find ways to relax.
- Get plenty of exercise.
- Try probiotics for a month to see if they help.
This could affect your daily life as it has an impact on your social life, fear, anxiety, physical tension and
depression are common in IBS and can actually increase abdominal pain and discomfort. A vicious cycle
begins as your pain leads to psychological distress, which leads back to more pain and increased sensitivity
to pain.

Celiac disease: Celiac disease is a serious disease that occurs in genetically predisposed people
where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine. When people with Celiac
Disease eat foods or use products containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging or
destroying villi. Villi normally allow nutrients from food to be absorbed through the walls of the small
intestine into the bloodstream. Celiac disease has many symptoms such as; diarrhoea, bloating, gas,
fatigue, weight loss, iron-deficiency anaemia, constipation, depression. Coeliac disease is
usually treated by simply excluding foods that contain gluten from your diet. This prevents damage to the
lining of your intestines (gut) and the associated symptoms, such as diarrhoea and stomach pain. Celiac
disease can affect your daily life by giving you anxiety, depression and fatigue are common issues reported
in celiac disease patients prior to diagnosis. Side effects of celiac disease can affect the brain in various
ways, lowering quality of life for those suffering from untreated celiac disease or even after diagnosis.

Short bowel syndrome: Short bowel syndrome (SBS, or simply short gut) is a
malabsorption disorder caused by a lack of functional small intestine. The primary symptom is diarrhoea,
which can result in dehydration, malnutrition, and weight loss. Treatment for mild short bowel syndrome
involves eating small, frequent meals; drinking fluid; taking nutritional supplements; and using
medications to treat diarrhoea. Short bowel syndrome can lead to malnutrition, unintended weight loss
and additional symptoms may be due to the loss of essential vitamins and minerals . There is no cure, but
the disorder usually can be treated effectively. Treatment for moderate short bowel syndrome is similar to
that for mild short bowel syndrome, with the addition of parenteral nutrition as needed . Short bowel
