intro:
In order to assess the extent to which the CCP was successful in replacing traditional beliefs
and attitudes in the period 1965-76, successful replacement will be defined as the traditional
beliefs and attitudes being entirely eradicated or destroyed. While the traditional attitudes
towards education were replaced to a large extent, religious beliefs and other traditional
attitudes were not entirely eradicated and replaced. Therefore, the CCP only successfully
replaced traditional beliefs and attitudes to a minor extent.

main body:
1) religion

during CR, religion denounced as one of the “four olds”

great number of churches destroyed in Tibet and many monks were beaten and send
to the laogai

1973 “criticise' Confucius campaign

however —> ccp did not fully eradicate all religious elements

confucian daily values too deeply entrenched in society

ancestor worship still happening

funeral of Zhou Enlai 1976

Mao treated like god-like figure

judgment: religion too engrained in Chinese society for it to be fully replaced and thus, the
CCP did not successfully fully replace traditional beliefs
2) women

traditional view: women were inferior and held a very low status in society

during cr —> gained a much larger political role

women comprised btwn 8-12% of party cadres from 1958-66

this increased to 21% from 1970-74
