MENDING WALL
Mending Wall is one of the widely quoted poems of
the 20th century American Poet Robert Frost. It is included
in his second collection of poetry "North of Boston".
Though it seems simple, several themes are discussed -
bond between men, tensions and distances between men,
contradictions within each person, season, humor etc.It is
a narrative poem written in blank verse.
While the poem has a serious tone, there are
elements of subtle humor in the speaker's interactions with
his neighbor. For example, the neighbor's statement,
"Good fences make good neighbors," can be seen as
humorous due to its simplicity and the speaker's
questioning of its necessity. Frost uses this to provoke
thought and reflection on the nature of boundaries and
human connections.
The poet rightly despises the outdated aspects and
beliefs of society.Building a wall between neighbors
reflecting on the human tendency to create divisions but
by mending it together shows their togetherness. It's the
biggest contradiction in the poem.
The poet also raises questions about the
necessity of these barriers and challenges the traditional
wisdom that "good fences make good neighbors." The
poem penetrates into themes of isolation, tradition,
