UNIT 3 – CITIZENSHIP, DIVERSITY AND THE PUBLIC SERVICES
TASK ONE – KEY CONCEPTS
“Diversity is the range of visible and non-visible differences that exist between a range of
people.”

INTERGRATION

The meaning of integration is everyone living with other people within an area, going to schools with
different individuals along with doing activities that people do in their spare time etc.
Overall it’s doing everything and anything with other people.

In South Africa they don’t believe in integration but they believed in segregation. There
were rules in the US to deny integration. For example South Africa used
segregation as there would have been beaches that only white people could go on
and no one else, also there would be different bus stops depending the colour of your
skin etc.

TOLERANCE

The definition of tolerance is realising that other people will be different to themselves as they’ll have their
own beliefs along with their cultural values. In the UK they were allowed to practice worshipping to their gods.
Tolerance is very important within the UK. This is because tolerance is a part of
the British values.

An example of tolerance could be individuals praying to who they believe
in where they would like, anyone example would be how individuals would dress.
They might have to dress certain way because of their religion or cultural traditions.

MULTICULTURALISM

Multiculturalism would be the different groups within a country. The main part
about this is making sure everyone respects each other no matter religion etc.
Within the UK, there is a lot of multiculturalism. The reason for this is back in
the past, the UK use to let a large amount of immigrants into the country.

An example of multiculturalism would be having different groups living in the
same area as each other. Each group has its own religion, cultural traditions and
more which makes them different to others. In Britain, because there are so many different groups, it allows all
individuals to learn about the different religions, bringing people closer together.

, RIGHT AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF INDIVIDUALS

The meaning of right and responsibilities of individuals is that every single individual in the UK have their
rights to do things they want. But each right has a responsibility with it. This makes people
equal to each other. In Britain everyone has the right to free education. This allows everyone to
go to school and improve their education. Another right they have is free healthcare so they
won’t have to pay. But these rights only come available if you pay tax. An example for this could be
having the right to live in freedom but reasonability would be to fight for your country to maintain
freedom.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES

The meaning of equal opportunities is everyone should and has the right to do
whatever they want without being picked out because of their gender,
race or age etc. Equal opportunities is extremely important to make sure
no one feels left out, it’s also important for the public services making
anyone able to join and society. Equal opportunities are about
respecting, fairness and kindness to others. An example of equal
opportunities would be trying to apply for the public services. The public services won’t turn you down
because of your gender, race, religion, sexuality.

POSITIVE ACTION INCLUSION

This is where individuals or even groups hope people to join the services and help out by
in the roles available.

The meaning of positive action inclusion is trying to get groups that are
unrepresented to get involved with the public services by helping them out
throughout the recruitment stages. Groups that aren’t as represented as others
are less likely to join the services but if the services can show this positive action
will happen.

CORPORATE SOCAIL RESPONSIBILITY

Corporate social responsibility is where the public services will identify how their actions will
make a positive view along with a positive impact with the society. This is important as
the public services will always want to make a positive impact with their actions to
society as it makes it better.
